Thanks - the only downside to this laptop is that it really does need 5Ghz to work properly over WiFi and my router is reluctant to do that. Airport Express for me at the weekend though

My refurb was missing the bundled apps: iMovie, word processor, spreadsheet blah-blah. Not a huge deal but I thought I mention it.

If your talking about Pages and Number when you say word processor and spreadsheet, OS X doesn't include them.

One of the best kept secrets are the refurbs.

Can't up vote this enough. If you know what you are looking for, and can wait until it comes up on the refurb page, you can get some of the best deals going in personal computers and mobile stuff (iPads, etc).

Refurbs might have a small scratch or scuff mark on the body, but that is about it.

All the refurb buys I personally know of (4 so far, including one of my own) have been as good a product as any brand new version.

Only thing to watch out for with refurbs is that occasionally previous generation products are more expensive than current ones. Go figure.

Some contend the refurbs are better than new. A new machine was assembled in a factory with whatever that region's attention to detail is, presumed correct (aside from straightforward tests), and shipped before any serious use; the device then goes to the user and enters the first stage where failure rates are relatively high. A refurb has already gone thru this high-failure-rate period and (failed or not) returned to the factory for a detailed individualized analysis with the full presumption something is wrong and a full-on attempt to find & fix the problem; it is then reassembled with domestic sensibilities.

Upshot is a refurb has undergone a "shakedown period", been individually analyzed under suspicion of defects, repairs applied, and then rebuilt at minimum to factory specifications. AND you get it for a discount. Win!

Only problem with refurbs is lack of BTO.

One of the best kept secrets are the refurbs. My 2007 & 2008 C2D BMB are still going strong, 54 C2D 2010 11" MBA's with 64 SSD's snapped up out of the refurb store, 3 for me, 51 for friends, who paid me to put in 256 and 512 OWC SSD's, every single unit, going strong. Please keep in mind, most are returned to Apple, because they found it to small, went to a 13", etc, in some cases there was a problem, which Apple addresses, every unit, is thoroughly gone over,retested,and certified.
I would never hesitate to buy a refurb,anytime, from the Apple store. Buy with confidence, always,anytime!

Few years back I purchased a refurb Mini, no issues.
Now I'm running two ATVs, no issues.

The only difference I can tell is the box.

Bought a refurbished MacBook Air last December. If it came with any defects, I am not noticing it. Works great, and looks virtually identical to the brand new macs I see at my local apple retailers.
