    Hi Everyone!

First post and it's a negative one, got to start somewhere I guess!

After the dissapointment of no new iMac or mac pro intros at MacWorld I thought I'll just wait a little longer maybe they'll quietly update them a bit later,
no such luck. My MBP 17" is at it's deathbed and I just couldn't wait any longer so ordered a refurbished 3.06GHz iMac, saved a few hundred euros on the price of the new one which would make the pain of an imminent update a little less.

The instant I turned it on I noticed about 6 big slightly dark patches on the screen, not a consistent bright display. There were also fingerprints all over the black back of the iMac but the screen was definitely not right. Needless to say the iMac is packed up ready to be sent back to Apple for a refund.

I'm feeling very anti-refurbished now, with the mind to wait now for an update and buy 'brand new' instead.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Would it be stupid to try another refurbished deal? I guess there is no advantage warranty-wise on buying brand new.

    cheers.

Macbook Pros first came out in early 2006. I can't believe yours would already be on it's death bed even if you got it the day it came out. I bought mine in the summer of 2006 and it's still in mint condition.

From what I've heard on here, refurbished iMacs are usually checked over more than non-refurbished. I think maybe you just got a dud. I would definitely try getting another refurbished.

Might want to wait longer than a couple of days.

    refurb = okay so far

I have purchased two refurb units, a Mac Mini and this 20" iMac. I have had the mini for 2 years, installed my own ram upgrade and it has been perfect. iMac for a week and it seems to be great also. I might be lucky or you just got a bad refurb unit.

I've had mixed luck with Apple refurbs.

I bought a 3G iPod and a Power Mac G5 and they were perfect, both looking like brand new. Four of my friends have also received products in great condition from the refurb store.

Eighteen months ago I bought a 20" iMac (white plastic) which had fingerprints all over the screen, a load of dead pixels, was covered with scratches and the AirPort didn't work. This was sent straight back for a refund and I've been wary about getting another refurb since then.

The majority seem to be great buys but the odd dog seems to slip past the QC every now and then.

Sounds like you've just had bad luck with Apple. I would just try and get another iMac and see if it's any better.

I might try again with a refurb but there's no 3.06GHz versions available at the moment (

It's a shame you don't get the original packaging with a refurb, maybe to stop you strying to resell it as 'new'?

Ordered mine this morning, status is currently "Prepared for Shipment". :)
