I have looked all over and feel that I am not looking at the right websites regarding signing up with Search Engines like Google. My wife's colleague miraculously has here website pull up in the number 2 spot on Google every time we run a specific and different keyword associated with her website. Is there a company that we are not looking at that can do this. What are we missing. We feel that once we figure this out, it will allow her to develop the traffic she needs to grow her business. Any help is greatly appreciated.

A very simple way to get ranking up is by cross linking with other partnering websites or friends. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think companies that help you boost search ranking are normally quite pointless, the more professional ones will post your links onto their own affiliated sites, other unethical companies just spam links onto forums, blogs so on. Unless you want your site to be associated with spam sites, you should choose carefully.

Depending on the user base for the actual site it could take months or even years for a site to make it into the to 10 ranking. Once your site is online Google will find it, so you don't have to worry about that. Rather, make sure your site has lots of appropriate keywords sprinkled throughout (ALT tags and page titles are good places to include these) and, as someone else already pointed out, make sure you are linked to as many other (not spam) websites that you can. Companies that specialize in search engine ranking are useless and will just take your money. No matter what they say, no one can guarantee search engine placement. You could be on page 1 one day and page 5 the next. This article offers more interesting insights to Google's page ranking.
