You should get the galaxy note 10.1 it has a very good stylus and Android is geared more towards productivity with desktop-level browser and file system access. IPad is useless when it comes to productivity because iOS is very much crippled without file system access.

Pretty much sums it up. Android is more geared towards productivity for these reasons. The transformer tf300 and tf700 are also good options especially with the docks. Crazy battery life as well.

Edit: TF300 recieved its jellybean update today. For the price you really can't beat it. Tegra 3, 1gb ram, android 4.1, available lapdock, great battery and 32gb all for under 400 dollars.

I solved the problem by owning all three.. MacBook Pro, iPhone & iPad. I just reach for whatever is more convenient at the moment. :)

You see, you are not selling me on the fact that the Android is a more productive platform than iOS. I'm sitting here browsing the Google play store for any sort of word processing application, spreadsheet application, or powerpoint application that is also built to take advantage of a tablet sized screen. Maybe I'm typing the wrong things into the search bar (word processor, excel, powerpoint, spreadsheet, etc.) but the best I could find was Documents to go which is not only old, but clearly not supported as it doesn't even work with the Galaxy note.

Meanwhile I hop onto the Apple App store and I find pages, keynote, numbers, Notability, Penultimate, iA Writer, Office2, and the list goes on. Not only that, but if the OP is in the liberal arts than there is a world of fantastic apps out there to help him in his studies on iOS.

Therefore does it matter if you can buy an Android tablet with more RAM, memory, more speed, etc if there is nothing decent to run on it. Could you provide me with a good reason as to why the Android platform is more productive than what is offered on iOS?

Given file system access, what specific productivity tasks can you do on an Android device that you cannot do on an iOS device?

Kingsoft office, quick office, Google drive, office suite pro to name a few.

Kingsoft office on my nexus 7? Toolbar on the top is scrollable. More items are visible at once on 10 inch tablets.
10 inch layout. The font, paragraph, etc expand when pressed. There's also more options if you pan the toolbar over or click one of the headings in the top right.

I haven't seen this asked, nor did I see you mention it: What did you expect the iPad to do for you? Or, what was the impetus for purchasing it?

By no means am I saying an iPad is better than a laptop or any other tablet because I have no experience with other tablets. However, you can download a file and attach it. I do it all the time. You just need Goodreader. It is a great file system.

Also, the iPad may be "useless" to some for productivity but I think there are a great deal of people like myself who find the iPad as a very useful productivity tool.

I'm trying to think of the number of times I've needed to download a file from the web and then email it to anyone.

Why wouldn't you just copy and paste the link to the page and email THAT instead?

Because a link is not a file? Regardless, I can create a document in pages and email as either a pages, word or PDF doc.

Third vote for the Logitech ultra thin keyboard case. It completely changed the way I use my ipad.

I use my ipad for any kind of typing, notes, etc. I prefer my ipad for mockups of software. I prefer the ipad for doing network diagrams.

But I still wonder who needs actual file system access? To do what? That sounds like a need from someone who is stuck in the mindset of an antiquated computing model. 'Those darn youngin's with their heads in the clouds! Back in my day a computer was useless without a floppy drive.'

The cloud stores my content. My apps access my content. The os manages my system files. I don't need to worry or deal with the crap under the covers.

This part baffles me. How does it waste time? How is it any different than opening the lid of your laptop and powering it up?

Even with a smart cover, it's faster than opening any laptop, even one with an SSD. The iPad is ready for you to use much faster than any other device.

True that.

+1,000

It seems like these guys are creating a problem where one doesn't exist, only to complain that iOS is no good for productivity because it can't do this one old thing the same way desktop OSs have always done it.

"Dagnabbit! Stop traipsin' through my begonias! You little whippersnapper!"

To re-state the obvious, the laptop is better for heavy-duty typing than the iPad. No question. A blue-tooth keyboard makes up a lot of the difference, but the laptop is still better. That's why for some people a MacBook Air is the best choice.

With that said, I've created a whole business plan and executive summary on my iPad. I worked on it at the beach the other day, whereas I would not have taken my laptop. Just as I take my iPad, and not my laptop, on vacations these days. I don't have any regrets.

to ruffian829...

good luck with the bar exam, took mine in '94 (passed first time!)
trick was i got a hotel room close to where they were holding it and locked myself in the room for 3 days prior (now spouse, kids, dogs, etc) and viola!

again good luck!

sorry for going off topic...

Thank you! I've already taken it (July)- took two states actually, I still feel like I can use all the luck I can get. Waiting until November for results is awful. I too got a hotel room, but only for one night. I have a one and a half year old so studying was definitely a challenge... But keeping my fingers crossed that I never need to take it again!

I do a lot of creation, rough concept drawings, mechanical drawings, typing, brainstorming no matter which device I'm using. 80% creation 20% consumption.

When I got my first iPad1 I used it for a month, hated the touchscreen keyboard and labeled it useless unless reading, watching, playing .... it ended up in a drawer.

About 8 months later I started using it again, pulled it out to load movies for a trip I think. I'm not sure what or how it happened except to say I started using it, typing more, checking out app's, doing some rough product idea sketches and in a short time I'd feel lost if I didn't have it nearby.

From that time to now I use my now 3rd gen iPad alongside my MacBook Air and iPhone all day, everyday. Its an incredible set up.

Here's some tips that should help:

1. USE the touchscreen keyboard (I prefer widescreen) you will be amazed how fast you get. If you need a real keyboard use your Mac not a third party iPad keyboard > defeats the purpose of the iPad, imo.

2. USE Dictation, it is AMAZING. I didn't feel comfortable using it at first. Now I bang off emails, posts, notes, and idea's using Evernote or Notepad for example. It's an inredible feature that everyone should use. Why type when you can talk? Get more done in less time.

3.Buy a Yoobao cover - instant on and very thin profile.

4. Research apps and check out the AppStore, lots of useful apps and tools out there.

By the way this post was written using dictation on my iPad. :)

great prices on Yoobao products at yoobao-usa
