when apple talked wireless with the iphone 7 i really hoped for wireless charging as the phone cant be used for music+charging now (wired anyway).... So this definatly has to start being normal in the upcoming iphone 8.....the anniversary iphone.

You aren't going to see a jump from 7 to 8. There will be the 7S next year before we see the 8 in 2018.

And there were people here just the other day all bent out of shape about putting just enough 2.4GHz signal into the air to transmit data a few feet. They're gonna blow a gasket over radiating out enough signal to charge electronics.

I'm all for this as long as I don't have to deal with people yelling "wattup?!" at me all the time. I might riot.
That video was like a really cringey university animation project.

And yet it probably cost over £1,000/min

Do you think? I know that's been the pattern but rumours are Apple want to do something big for the 10th anniversary iPhone.

It's going to be hard to get this to work well with a metal cased device... at least without more antenna lines that people hate.

Isn't the new iphone rumoured to be made of all glass? Or would that cause the same problem?

luckily your predictions are very different from pretty much everything online.

It's possible that we'll still see a 7S next year with a premium model being sold as the "iPhone Anniversary Edition" or something similar. With the 7S being a modest upgrade in the same form factor and the Anniversary Edition having the new form factor and several big new features.

But does Energous wireless charging actually work, or is it more of a "this would be amazing if we got it to work, let's do a video and an IPO and see what happens" kind of thing? Hard to see how anything could receive more power than with a solar cell, and even that would have difficulty charging a phone of it's own size.

Rumors are silly. 99.9% of them never come to be. If rumors were true the iPhone 4 would have had a 3D display, virtual keyboard, projector, wireless charging, and more. As I said, rumors rarely ever come true.

There was no 10th anniversary iMac and no 10th anniversary iPod. Those were both huge hits before the iPhone came along.

Wireless charging a 'feature' of new Skylake CPUs ...shouldn't this be an obvious step for long overdue Macbook Pros ('the biggest update yet')? Same power brick format but emitting WattUp signal. ...perhaps an optional USB-C cable/port for fast direct charging.

...somebody mock that up in photoshop and get a bunch of free internet points.

Apple, always playing catch-up. Shame on Tim. Samsung already has introduced a way to recharge their latest phones remotely as shown by this footage:

Totally different wireless charging technology, dude. This isn't inductive charging we're talking about.

Normally I would not believe this video but Apple has been emphasizing wireless future with great confidence in the past few keynotes. Imagine Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple pencil, magic trackpad, Apple keyboard, etc... Can't wait for it to happen!

True wireless charging should give you a range and leave you untethered.

I've always thought current wireless charging to be largely pointless as the device still has to make contact with the charger unit itself, so you just may as well just have a wire instead. The way it's labelled as wireless reminds me of those hoverboards that don't hover.

For the Watch it's a definite win, because they don't have to have an electrical connector on the outside of the small device. For the phone, I don't see it as much of a positive thing.

Microwaves, yay! That's the future!
There was once a proposal (never went anywhere), to "heat" homes with very low-level microwaves. The idea being that heating all that air volume was inefficient, when all you actually cared about, the goal of home heating, was the comfort of the "ugly bags of mostly water" that were walking around inside the home. Heating them (the aforementioned bags of water) directly via microwave radiation would be much more efficient. Yeah, people didn't like that idea very much for some reason.

That wouldn't make sense unless the anniversary edition were either extremely difficult to manufacture, or cost over $1000, or both. Otherwise if they go through that much engineering to design a new phone, they would just make that the iPhone 8 and keep the 7 as the usual last-year's model. 7s, or "anniversary 8"... but probably not both.

This as currently developed is far too large for a phone - way too bulky. The "charger" is gigantic and probably costs thousands. So -lots of minturization work to be done. Apple has a lot of expertise and would love to see them figure out a way to make this work but will require a ton of heat dissipation.
well, if you can endure the snarky, impatient, smarter-than-you-what-took-you-so-long-apple??, comments from everyone and their sisters for the next 12 months, i'm pretty sure you'll live to see it happen.

If only the internet had more than one site! Or better yet, let's just let you supply a list of guidelines so that we don't run afoul of your curated list of what you want to read about that agrees with your tastes and wants, Your Majesty.

Your anti-Samsung rants are just plain boring. This forum is about Apple not Samsung.

Always knew Apple had something bigger like this planned. I like that they don't rush into things and take their time for a much more viable solution. Wireless charging like Samsung's isn't true wireless guys, so I don't understand why some rip on Apple for not having it when "Samsung has had it forever!". It still needs to be placed on a mat which is connected to... a wire. Apple knows this, which is why they never rushed into it just for the sake of including it.

People want the convenience of wireless charging with charge times equivalent to wired vs a trickle charge that could potentially make you sterile.

While the charging mat isn't ideal, I can still see its usefulness. If you're going to put your phone down on a table while you do something it may as well be charging while its laying there doing nothing. Then you can grab and go over and over again without plugging the phone itself in.

Unless you literally NEVER put your phone down, in which case... Put it down once in a while? :)
