Hi ,

Hold the "Command" + "R" ( lower case is fine ).

This should bring you to a screen where you can choose from backup install time machine and a couple of other options.

If your speed is fast , it will take more time to install than download , if you have average broadband speed ( 50~75) it could take about an hour.

BUT , what I would do is:

Use the disk utility and re-format you HDD or SSD ( journaled ) that way you are not writing on top of an op-sys.

Because you are doing it this way you will have a clean slate plus you WILL get back your recovery partition. ( I think that is one of the options , don`t use it you will always get it , there was a time when you did NOT , but now you do.

If you don`t have a time machine backup , then take your whole "home-folder" , the folder that looks like a house and put it on a cloud or flash drive .

Once you have the new op-sys installed you will go through the setup again , IF you have used Apple`s Cloud service sign-in and then sign in with your Apple ID.

Once you get to the main page you might even find some of your old stuff waiting for you , because you singed in.

IF you want a blank canvas to build from and know about account and permissions then don`t click or sing into the cloud and don`t sign in with your Apple ID , you will still get to the main page only it will be all generic , as if Apple never heard about you !!

A lot of trail and error , ONE LAST IMPORTANT FACT !~!!

Your iLife Apps ??????

Make sure they are in your apps list in the App Store , if not copy the images from your applications folder to a flash drive , or else they might be gone for good unless you have 3 yr Apple Care or your computer is less than 90 days old.

Don`t worry about preferences , unless to backed up , you will be in for a long rebuild , if you have time machine do a migration ( selective ) , that way you are not dumping the bad with the good onto a fresh system folder.

Any problems , PM me . good luck , with me luck too , I have to go through the same thing with my new Mac Mini , I can`t load Adobe Reader DC ( the free reader . not the paid Acrobat ).

Later ,
