I bought a mac with OS X 10.4 installed.

Today the system no longer worked (freezes on startup). I don't have the install disks.

I do have OS X 10.3 though, so I am insalling that version.

I chose the option "clean install, archive previous version, import user profiles".

Upon completion, my old user profile from 10.4 is there on 10.3, yet my old password (which I know is correct because I had used it previously in the day) is not recognized.

The problem is not keyboard layouts, because I tried doing command-space several times to change the keyboard layout and retype the password, yet nothing doing.

(I could reinstall 10.3 without the "import user profiles" option, but now it tells me my disk is scratched and installation cannot be done!)

Thanks in advance for any reply to this weird problem.
