Done Deal! 17 hours and 160.00 later she is up and running once again. All goodies reinstalled, time machine backup in progress. Thank you all for leading me to the right path! Greatly appreciated. Lynsey

The disk image did manage to open on the second try and turned into the installer app. I was surprised it did after getting error messages. I verified the app was in the applications folder. I used terminal with the appropriate commands for Sierra. After two tries changing the date, I finally got it right. You have to pick a date that is after the launch of Sierra. After all of that, it did install smoothly. I feel a big help was that my Macbook Pro has the same OS and that is where I did all of the prep work.

I got a sierra image to open. I got to the installer package app and right clicked it. There is no "show package contents" by right clicking. I formatted a usb and got the Terminal to copy the installation files to the usb now...fingers crossed.
You actually need to OPEN the installer package, not right click. That will install "Install MacOS Sierra.app" in your applications folder. Use that app to make the bootable USB flash drive. Use the free and excellent "Install Disk Creator" by Mac Daddy to make it.
