recently I had tried to install ubuntu on my macbook, it went horribly wrong, so I've decided to do a fresh install of OS X, but I was wondering if I do reinstall, is it possible to erase the entire hard drive (partitions and all) when installing?

Yes, you can erase the entire hard drive.

There is no need to reformat the entire hard drive, though. Just remove the Ubuntu partition using Disk Utility.
