Not at all sir. Maybe not as crazy as it was in 2000-2005, but still really strong.
I think Eidorian's post was meant tongue-in-cheek. A friendly dig at all those who for many years now keep repeating the nonsense that PC gaming is dying or dead. However, if you look at services like Steam with over 25 million active accounts & growing, PC gaming is in fact thriving. :)

I had a set of several absurdly huge images with the covers of the best PC games from ~1985 - 2008. I don't own enough of them.

OpenCL can be a a good thing too for valve.
Why would it?

OpenCL is on Windows too, but people do not want to use it.

The only use for the GPU other than graphics is physics, which is already acellerated on Windows with the GPU. If Apple would port PhysX, it's on Linux and Windows.

All Macs with Nvidia cards on sale since around 2007 support PhysX.

Too bad the high end graphics are ATI, so they would be missing out. And the people with Nvidia cards probably couldn't use PhysX, except maybe one or two decent cards (Macbook Pro?)

I'll buy Half-Life 1, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 all on day one if Steam comes to Mac. I'll use the money I was saving up for a new internal hard-drive and Windows 7. :)

Thank you; in other words, this means absolutely NOTHING of relevance to the world of Mac gaming...especially since most couldn't care less about yet another social networking thing. As for the rest of media needs, iTunes serves the globe pretty well...

It means a Hell of a lot to Mac gaming. Valve bases their games on the source engine. If the source engine is ported to mac, that makes it MASSIVELY easier to release their games simultaneously for Mac as well as PC. Taking Blizzard's approach, this would allow Mac gamers to purchase new games the day (or rather close to the day) they are released for PCs, rather than over a year later at double the current cost of the one's for PC. (A la Bioshock).

So to say this has nothing to do with a huge advancement for Mac gaming is completely asinine.

Valve games don't use DirectX???

Second, they have to be making a native version of Source for Postal III. Crossover and Cider are not emulators, just an implementation of all the Windows APIs. So in order to run them, you need to have an x86 processor. Postal III will run on the PlayStation 3 (with it's IBM POWER-based Cell processor), so they already have to be porting the engine. There's no reason for them not to do an OpenGL port and get all platforms supported at once.

Orange Box was already released for PS3, so the port of Source is already done (minus any new features added by Postal 3). This has very little to do with porting the engine to OSX.

I*agree*partially*but*i*dont*think**most**games*are*console*ports..*Just*looking*on*Steam*shows*there's*a*hell*of*a*lot*of*middle to*high*profile*titles*always*coming*out*that*never*make*it*to*consoles*at*all,*let*alone*the*mac.*I*dont*think*the*number*of*exclusives*is*decreasing*if*you*consider*the*indie*and*small*studios*in*that*equation.*(a*lot*of*whom*bring*some*of*the*most*interesting*games*to*the*table*anyway)

Console*ports*only seem*inevitable*because*of*the*spiralling*development*costs*of*AAA*games. Most*stuff*is*still*much**much* nicer*on*the*PC.*(Even*the*"console*ports")..

Even*so, I agree and*I*think*it'd*take*most devs*a*LOT*of*persuasion*to*support*the*Mac.*I'd*love*to*see*Rockstar*onboard personally.*:/

WTF is that all about?

Portal 2

Valve has just announced Portal 2 for a holiday release. So far, the only platform confirmed is PC, but I'd assume we'll be seeing a port, due to this whole Mac Steam thing.

I got it! I got it!

... Joke. Steam running in Parallels. >.< Can't wait for the "real" Mac version. :D

I know a lot of you on the Apple Games forums as we've been hanging out here for the past 2 years sharing gripes about the cross we have to carry as hardcore gamers (or even casual-moderate gamers) who decide we also want to use OS X.

I've seen a few comments here and there in relation to the WONDERFUL :D news that Steam is most likely coming out for OS X. (I think even if Steam releases its chat system that is wonderful so I at least know when to dual boot to join friends).

Anyways... I can't believe how hostile some fellow MR users are towards gaming/Steam. They speak about it like its some "social networking thing" or something else and write it off. It's obvious these people don't play PC games or even understand how popular/loved Valve/Steam are by gaming companies.

WTF is wrong with these people? Why are they trashing such good news. I almost dropped my eye phone and cried tears of joy when I read this. After so many "petitions", Steam user groups joined, and hacked ways to play on Crossover (in addition to giving up and dual booting) our cries, fellow gamers, may yet be answered!!

Great  I just went out and bought another copy of FM10 because I couldn't use my Steam version on the Mac...

If you already have a Steam account but want to use it on your brand-new Macbook, for instance, your Steam keys will still work."

If that proves to be the case then fantastic. To be able to download L4D2 et al, run them on OS X and not have to pay extra!

Oh that's an awesome find. Not surprising but still awesome.

I wonder if I will be able to drag the Windows version of the game, eg CS:S, to the Mac Steam folder to save from downloading it all again...
