to Mojave? Monterey?

Big Sur still is working fine on my MB Pro 15" Touchbar (2017).

I keep getting the nag to upgrade, but I have avoided it.

Am I really missing out on this hardware?

Well, Apple bumped me to Big Sur 11.6.8 today, so I guess I will keep running it for awhile longer. :)

I believe the biggest jump was from Mojave to Catalina, ie dropping 32bit.
Catalina to Big Sur is mostly facelift UI changes (CMIIW).
Big Sur to Monterey, I dunno.
I read somewhere that Apple had some big changes underneath, but I forgot which OS generation was that.

Big Sur is still fully supported. I think unless you have Apple Silicon macs, you probably won't miss much by staying on Big Sur.

Big Sur seems to be just fine on this MBP. I havent bothered to try and install it on my classic Mac Pro, but I know it can be done.

I guess if/when forced by application needs I’ll move to Montery. Otherwise just ignore the nags.

Since you didn't write exactly what you do on your Mac or what you'd like to do folks can only guess as to why you might want to upgrade.

Apple doesn't do a good job on releasing details to the general public. There are many new Terminal commands in Monterey, for instance. One must dig around the interwebs to find out what they are.

I run the "normal" applications.....word, excel, Web, video editing, etc.

As I have posted before at length (LOL), I upgraded my Air to Monterey and all my Western Digital external drives stopped working properly meaning I could no longer back up my Mac or work from them. So I went through the headache of downgrading (basically a factory reset/reinstall) back to Big Sur and they all work fine again.

Not intending to scaremonger - many here have upgraded without issue - but if you use external WD drives you might want to be careful. My external Samsung SSD was not affected.

There's a few nice things about Monterey I like. Resume on file transfers in Finder is nice and the Messages app is slightly better. 12.5 works perfectly on my M1 and 2013 iMac. On my 2015 MBP its noticeably slower and about 25 degrees hotter. 12.5 seems to have stabilized the hot temps better than 12.4, but I am going to roll back to 11.6.8 so I don't melt my MacBook.

Based on what I've read, that's what I was generally gathering.....Monterey is optimized for M-architecture.

For Intel-based systems, it seems to have limited value over Big Sur.

Just my $.02

Can you please share the complete list? So that we could all learn something new and potentially useful.
I'm not holding back any info here! In my search for the information I found a few pages/blogs (including the one you linked to) and saw that the different pages had varying examples of new commands for Monterey…you know…just writing about what interested them, I guess. My statement should have read "One must dig around the interwebs to try to find out what they are."

I'm wondering if developers even get a definitive list from Apple.

"Why the secrecy?" is what I wonder.

I had issues with the touchpad when I had Monterey installed, swiping back on a webpage didn't work, pinch to zoom didn't work, etc.. A few other minor issues that I can't remember now.

I downgraded back to Big Sur, and it works perfectly. I saw a youtube video that compared benchmark performance on the same machine, first running Big Sur, then he upgraded to Monterey and ran the same tests and there was a marginal performance increase with MOnterey, (like 1625 to 1640) but the average user will never notice that kind of performance difference while doing average tasks.

So, I'm in the same boat - convince my why it's a good idea to upgrade. I monitor a few threads here on macrumors regarding issues with Monterey, and I still see people having touch pad issues and a few other things.

long story short, at this point, sorry that's a no for me dawg.

I'm ready to upgrade my main iMac (2017) from Big Sur to Monterey but there's one big issue that's worrying me. I still use iTunes and don't want to lose it. From what I can tell that isn't possible. Does anyone have any info they can share about that ?

Retroactive has worked on 12.x on every Intel Mac I have tried it on. 12.9.5 doesn't appear to work on M1 although 10.7 does.
