Reminders not showing badge app icon

As the title says. I get a notification when my phone is locked, and the reminder is displayed on my lock screen, but no badge app icon.

I've set the Notification settings for Reminders to be Alerts, and I've checked the Badge App Icon.

Can anyone suggest why there are no badge app icons?

It's been like that for some time, well before iOS 9. It's a little bit of a mixed bag as to when it shows up. However often once the initial alert/notification is dismissed (without marking the reminder as completed) then it will show up, or later on in the day. From a number of threads about this in the past, it doesn't seem like a particular pattern or explanation has really been established.

So it's a little random weather or not a badge app icon will show or not? I've tried changing the priority and none of the priorities make a difference.

It seems to be working now with the !!! priority...
