Remote Desktop, Do I Need 2 Copies?

Do I need to pay for a copy for the machine I intend to use as the client as well as the one I use as the head?

No. The client is built into the OS. If you only want to screen share to one computer you don't need to pay for any copy of Remote Desktop. That functionality is also built in.
