I may shortly need to spend some time working on a family member's mac several miles from my home. I was considering using ARD as a means of doing light maintenance and application work from afar.

I know this may be vast overkill, but is this a reasonable use of the program? Anyone want to share experiences?

My dad does that!

If both computers are on Leopard, continue reading. Else... Explain further on what you have and what you are connecting to.

Here's what I set my dad up with:

Make sure you have a dyndns domain for the computer. This way you don't need remember the dynamic IP the ISP gives out, and it's easier to remember.

Don't use ARD! It's a great program, but it's designed for LANs and VLANs. I'd recommend using Leopard's built-in VNC!

So on Leopard's desktop hit: :apple: + K. This brings up the server browser window. And type this in:

vnc://<Insert dyndns name of the computer>

You need to make sure the other computer gets remote login and has screen sharing on!

cool.

but "dyndns domain"? that's a new one on me.

i know the domain he is on.
