Presumably this will be Bluetooth based, and hopefully will work with Macs too.

It sucks that the current Apple Remote can't be used with recent Macs since they did away with the IR receiver.

We are actually on the second revision of the silver remote. The first one didn't have convex/concave buttons and was EXTREMELY difficult to navigate by touch alone.

Please, no touch on the remote. One of the great things about the current remote is how I don't have to look at it at all to use it. It is so intuitive by feel alone. Unlike the remote apps, which require constantly looking down at the app to ensure your finger is in the right place.

Not everything is better with touch. Some things are much worse with touch.

If it has haptic feedback, you would be able to feel the buttons. Imagine force touch to speed up the fast forward.

Agreed. Because I'm usually too lazy to find my ATV remote, I tend to use my phone with the remote app instead. Trying to swipe and move from one "channel" on the home screen to the next is really annoying...it often skips and goes two spaces over instead of one. That needs to be fixed.

On an Apple TV? For what?

To authorize a payment I presume. There are situations where you don't want your password automatically remembered (e.g. kids). Touch ID would replace having to enter your password for each purchase, while prying eyes see what you're entering.

Ya I'd love that too. Unfortunately even the phone with Touch ID I still constantly have to enter my password. Kind of makes Touch ID pointless

Ideally, I want to be able to control my Apple TV from my MacBook, via something similar to screen sharing. My computer is on my lap almost all the time I'm watching TV. I would love to be able to select a program without reaching for another device.

The current remote is horrible. Easy to lose, not enough functionality unless you figure out all the stupid shortcuts. Roku got this one right over Apple.

"Easy to lose?" What a stupid argument. All remotes are easy to lose! You can fast forward, rewind, pause, open the menu, etc. What more "functionality" is it supposed to have?

Finally! The current Apple TV remote is the WORST. So annoying to navigate. So un-apple like. I'm surprised it took them this long to fix this.

Hm, this would indicate that the remote's battery is going to need a regular recharge.

I don't think I've had to replace my AppleTV remote in the four years I've owned it.

Maybe this time, I won't lose the remote. Every one I know always lost their remotes. It's so thin, it slips through every crack easily and you'll never find it again.

Thank god for the Remote app on the iOS devices.

I completely agree.

Although I have to ask, which cracks? lol

Can you say "over-engineered"? Haptics, JUST for a remote? Doh.

ButButButttt... it's "alooooooomeenummm"

Navigating with the touch screen on the iPhone remote app is imprecise and unpleasant. You never know how much to swipe to get to where you want to be. It constantly overshoots. Especially when in Netflix or movies or the like and trying to go down to the row of suggested/similar content beneath the current content you're considering - it overshoots and takes you down to the more info page every time! So annoying.

This ALWAYS happens to me when using the app. So frickin annoying.

All this over a silly remote? I was lucky enough to sell my original :apple:TV, the black V2 sits in a box somewhere. Apple screwed me twice with this over-promised and under-delivered loser product line. I could give a flip about V3 or the shape of its remote.

Why not just convert the circle to a click wheel? It'd be perfect.

I love the click wheel. You can scroll indefinitely, and as fast as you want; something you can't do on "touch pads."

Can scroll indefinitely on my Sony Bravia remote (has a touch pad). You just swipe left/right and keep your finger to that side. Can be done.

I think its about time the new Apple TV and its remote became much thinner and lighter... what it this, 2008???

By now the Apple TV should be thinner than a pencil, and the new remote with touchscreen and touch ID, thinner than a paper clip wire.

Get to work Apple!

[/sarcasm]

Wait - there's a battery? (/sarcasm for those that couldn't tell...)

I've had a bunch of those stupid remotes for years and never had one crap out.
I guess I never thought about it before, but they must be the most efficient remotes in the world.

The new remote isn't going to have any buttons and will use force touch and haptic feedback. Called It!

I'm still using the little white remote control that came with my original (2006) MacBook. The remote is perfect for controlling my docked iPhone 4, which serves as a de facto Apple TV.

Thats' quite a setup for TV
