I love it when a plan comes together!

This is killer! Great idea!!!!! Love it!

:D:D:D:D I give this feature a 4 out of 4 happy faces!

Probably will need MobileMe for this

This could be what Steve jobs meant by making the service better by the end of the year. Imagine also having an iTunes tab on me.com. That would be really awesome.

YES PLZ!

Sure it's easy to make a smart playlist for my iPhone but to have the ability to play ANY of my songs anywhere I am? Maybe I SHOULD get the iPhone 3G. :)

Woah, I might want to wait before I buy an iPod Touch then.

The main reason I want a Touch is because they offer more storage... if I'm able to stream stuff from home via 3G though... I wouldn't need any storage for the 30 some GB of media I have on my computer. I could just get the cheapest iPhone 3G (of course the plans cost a lot more than I'd like to spend... I'll have to think about it more...)

Wow, I didn't think about that. Would be nice not having to bring my external drive to work any more. I guess I'll have to get a Mac Mini to run some things at my house. :)

Ohhh, that's a "non-obvious-patent" for sure... Who could even imagine that such a thing would be possible ;)

ipod sync

yes!!! thank god. But does this also mean I can sync the Touch through Wi-Fi (instead of connecting the cable and then syncing). It would be great if I feel like watching a TV show, to just sync it wirelessly and then take it away with me so that I don't have to manually go to the computer!

If only Wi-Fi networks are more easily accessible. yes its easy to set up one at your house, or go to coffee shop/airport etc... but seriously its still so limited...

Why just wifi? Post says cellular networks too. I'd imagine 3G is fine for this. :)

Yeah, who would have guessed that in the future (when fast, wireless networks really ARE everywhere) all iPods will only have 512 MB of memory and they'll wonder why ANYONE would have wanted a 32 GB cell phone!

Well 32GB would store a lot more meta data; also maybe the memory will only store parity information. So small enough to make files very small, while streaming will have the rest of the data; and with the 2 combine reconstruct the information on the fly. This way the network doesn't get bogged down by everyone streaming their music.

Except that in the future, 512MB of 32GB will cost about the same. ;)

Or 512MB will actually cost more to make because of lower demand and yield.

Does this mean you would have to have your computer on all the time? Energy bills are getting expensive.

Well you can probably be able to stream from a Time Capsule or a Airdisk connect to a AEBS.

Or even better the new computers will include something like the mini-Linux, except it will be mini-OSX, which will be just enough to stream music and leave nothing else on.
Maybe I SHOULD get the iPhone 3G. :)

Yeah, probably with a $20 "OTA Media Access Fee"

Apple still up to their old tricks. Taking the best from developers and building it

Taking the best from developers and building it into their products thereby crushing a would be healthy and productive member of the community.

Example: Simplify Media which streams the iTunes media to the iPhone and iPod Touch, has been submitted to the AppStore, and still has not seen the light of day!

edit: yeah what ModernDemagogue said

Whose going to be paying or the live streaming from your home?

You may get the free access from Starbucks or where ever, but the stuff has to get onto Starbucks network first.

It isn't practical at the moment.

A nice idea all the same.

Yes, I agree! Tho I would want 802.11n for a fast transfer. :)

I don't know why people are so excited.

SimplifyMedia also already does this as well, and has been doing so for months. I can even access different iTunes libraries on different machines rather than tethering me to one library, plus it automatically pulls up band info, lyrics, etc...
No **** Simplify Media is the bomb... I too have been using this as well. Best app ever. I wish I had got on the the 2.0 beta release. Cause it worked flawlessly under 1.4

My son's PSP can access our PS3 via an internet connection and play music, movies or view photos on the PS3 or content on my Mac that streams to the PS3.

Pretty cool!

Power Draw from WiFi/3G

I was just thinking about how cool this would be, just a few hours ago. At the time, I also thought the power draw with the WiFi being in constant use would be just too much to make it uesful.

As others have said the 3G network should be enough.

However (and I'm uninformed here), would the power draw from the WiFi/3G use be mitigated somewhat by the reduction in power draw from maintaining the contents of the smaller memory capacity of a future device.

...though admittedly this won't help people with existing devices.

I wonder if this service allows you to stream directly from your computer to your iPhone or does it all have to go through Apple's servers. I like the convenience of cloud computing and things like MobileMe, but I'm still not convinced about having all my information being stored on a third-party. Although admittedly, ISPs can probably cache your data for later analysis if they wanted to too.

I still hope that Apple allows Airdisks on Base Stations and Time Capsules to act as a media store for iTunes. That would eliminate duplicate libraries on my computers, and allow streaming to iPhones without keeping the computer on all the time.

This better just be an option because I sure as heck wouldn't want to use it. I mean, I've got over 1100 songs on my iPhone and it's only 8GB. The only way I'd ever get to a point where I didn't have enough music would be if I went crazy and put tons of video on there but, ya know, there'll be a 32GB come this time next year (if not sooner).

I also say it should only be an option because what about all the time you aren't able to get cell data coverage? I.E. a plane, in a foreign country (unless you want to pay thousands of dollars to listen to your music). With the ever decreasing costs of flash HD's I really don't see this being that big of an issue. And not only is it a power sink on your phone but you also have to leave your computer on all day - no sleeping. Seeing as how I have a laptop and I'm not about to leave it open p!ssing away electricity (and my money by extension) all day I just don't see much of a use for it only in the rare occasion someone says "Hey, do you have this old obscure song that nobody really listens to anymore but it's a novelty?" (Tubthumping anyone?)

I can run Pandora for over eight hours over Wifi.
Far from useless...

Apple could also make this accessible over Edge if they chose. It might affect audio quality, so hopefully they'd offer a setting to govern that choice. Still, it would be cool in any case to do this...

Awesome. Image that. I could then buy another mini just as a server.....

would be cool, if there was a way we could selectively listen and view other people's media as well - or put a link to the media right on our iweb websites - hosted by web.me.com.

here's why:

1. I work with a Christian Artist who really told me I could do what I want with his music. Meaning, if I wanted to create videos for it - go ahead. right now I post them on youtube:

http://youtube.com/shervieux

2. Our Church has been posting some of their worship messages and music on the internet, but space has always been an issue.

this way I would not be limited to policies of youtube, would not have to worry about space (external terabyte drive anyone?), and would not have to worry about putting a link on my Christian website to youtube and exposing people to all the garbage that is out there (I also have the same videos on GodTube).

http://godtube.com/shervieux

This would be cool, because then when people ask about my work, I can just take out my ipod and say "here look" rather than writing down the web address for them to go to later. of course the only drawback is my ISP only allows dynamic IP addresses and they charge upwards of $200 a month for a static one - to which they say (no webhosting allowed unless you apply for a business account) and with a business account, the bandwidth drops and the price increases (backwoods mom and pop phone company).

man the possibilities..... Maybe, just maybe I will keep my me account?

i would LOVE to see a cheap new ipod touch/iphone with no internal storage, because you just stream whatever you want to the ipod.

brilliant idea apple!

I would love it until I hit the range limit of whatever wifi I'm on or the cell network.

In principle this sounds great, but I imagine there are some significant obstacles to it.

That said, even remote wifi/3G syncing would be nice. I.e., update/refresh a playlist remotely if you're away from home.

LOL @ all who bought 16 gb iPhones.

Saw this coming a mile away, knew 16 was overkill, got the color I wanted AND saved a hundred bucks, (which then bought me hundred worth of apps ;) ) AND will soon be able to stream a 120 gigs to my phone.

Sweet.

You beat me to it. Yep, the way the PlayStation 3 and PSP do this is absolutely amazing. I'd be pretty happy if we get similar functionality from Apple.
