So I've tried searching around various websites to find a way to do this, but I've not had any luck yet.

My current set up has a macmini running OSX 10.7 attached to the TV via HDMI. We use it for media and things like that. I also have a macbook running OSX10.6, and a windows 7 pc.

What I want to be able to do is remote login from the macbook with a GUI and be able to run various programs, while the macmini is running netflix or something else.

When I try using screen sharing all I can do is get a mirror of what's on the TV. I had ARD suggested, but it's 80$... I rather find a free way to do this.

    Does anyone have a suggestion?

If you have another display in addition to the TV, you can easily do this. I use TeamViewer, which is free for personal use and works with Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Ubuntu, iPhone, iPad, etc. It's very secure and quite simple to set up and use (no messing around with ports), which comes in handy if providing remote support to those who aren't very computer literate. You can talk them through the setup on their end and be connected to them in less than a minute. I prefer it over LogMeIn because it includes free file transfers between computers, a feature I use frequently.
