Remote Unresponsive - What am I missing?

Is there anything you have to do to make the new remote work? I had to set up the Apple TV with the old remote. I can't get the new one to work at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, use the old remote to check if bluetooth is turned on. The new remote uses that.

Believe it or not, they must have shipped the remote completely dead. I really wasn't expecting that. I plugged it in and kept it close to the ATV and it eventually worked. If I didn't have the old Apple TV remote I don't know how I would have figured that out
