Remotely Switch Users?

I went to switch users and the cube rotated to a blank blue screen. No menu bar, no dock, won't respond to cmd+opt+esc or shft+cmd+q. However the job i was running on the other acct is still going because the disk activity on my external drive is still goign. it's been like this for 2 hours and I dont' know what to do. I can't shut it off because that job is running. Is there some way of getting it to switch back the other acct remotely or another keyboard shortcut? From what I can tell though it wont' respond to keyboard shorcuts but the comptuer isn't "frozen".

Do you have SSH (Remote Login) enabled?

Do you have remote access enabled, i.e., SSH access? Or maybe have VNC enabled on the account? Those are the options I can think of for remoting in, but you need to already have them enabled.
