Background and ad-free playback are pretty much the only two reasons I jailbreak now.

YouTube is a prime example of someone who's completely forgot where they came from. They were made by the people and could be just as easily left behind by the same. All this nonsense about not being able to play content in the background without paying is absolutely insane. Not to mention the loss of revenue for creators due to their own systems messing up constantly. They are extremely bloated now. I wish someone else would just copy their original concept, and get rid of all the corporate garbage they'd be so much more successful.

True. Kind of same applies to Apple too though.
Replace people with Troublemakers, Misfits, rebels, etc etc, You know the ad.

One thing they're not mentioning is that the biggest issue for YouTube was that they couldn't play the ads in front of the videos in Apple's version of the app. That's the first thing that showed up in YouTube's new app.

Exactly. This no doubt is what he meant when he said the decision "paid off," though he didn't admit that it was about advertising.

The problem is the app under Google isn't as good, we still don't have picture in picture for YouTube videos, co'mon YouTube it should of been updated by now!

Someone should have recorded what the you tube app was like on iOS6 and put it on you tube.

It's still missing one HUGE feature, and that is PiP support on iPad. With other video playing apps you can exit the app and keep watching the video in a window. YouTube purposefully blocked that for some reason.
I believe it has something to do with ads not being able to run in PiP mode by don’t quote me.

Hate the platform, not the content.

I hate Facebook, not my friends.

I hate YouTube, not the videos.
How do you separate the content from YouTube itself? It’s not like the UI or the commenters add any value to the experience.

Check out PiPifier, it’s a free app that gives you an option to run a YouTube or any clip in safari through a share sheet. It’s really easy and makes for a great experience. No jailbreak necessary. All the developer wants is a tip of 1 to 2 dollars if you feel inclined to give in the form of an in app purchase, but it is totally optional.

The PiPifier app,
PiPifier - PiP for every web video by Arno Appenzeller
https://appsto.re/us/xYrMjb.i , allows you to do picture in picture for YouTube on safari through share sheets. Not through the app though, but it’s good :)

Use and love this extension on the Mac but had no idea it was avaialbe for iOS. Made my dayn (yes, I’m easily pleased). Downloaded it, tried it and sent the dev a tip through IAP.

We send Apple £350 million a week, let's fund our Android instead. Vote Leave.

Sorry. Being from Britain means the phrase 'Take Back Control' is somewhat burned into the national psyche...

Great Britain-- the Blackberry of nations.

Anyone else think it strange that these details are even suppressed in the first place, let alone for years after the fact?

I don't even use the new app for Youtube because it forces you to sign in. I'm sick of signing in to everything on the internet.

Not when you see that as potentially taunting Steve Jobs' Apple. Who would want to provoke or taunt that guy? Apple could have thrown together a video portal and maybe even rivaled Youtube before it became the behemoth of today.

Had Apple created a video upload portal and given it prominent placement on the iPhone, it could have been a serious threat to Youtube. It's not as complicated as mapping, so I think there's a high chance they could have found success.

I thought we were all well aware of this? It allows Google to update the app as often as they want, rather than having to wait for iOS updates to package their updates.

Hey YouTube, how about adding like, subscribe and related vids to your lame ATV app. Why are you taking your content creators and audience for granted?

I completely agree about adding basic features like subscribe. But, it is worth noting that the ATV3 app has those things, it is the ATV4 YouTube app that is missing very basic features.

But that’s obvious. Built-in 3rd party apps is a silly idea. Every company is different and their product vision changes. Can you imagine YouTube trying to implement a new feature, whilst having to run everything by Apple?

YouTube: “Hey! We’ve got this awesome new feature and we’re going to bring it to the app!”

Apple: “No. That feature doesn’t fit our vision for iPhone, sorry.”

It worked when there was no App Store. The App Store made built-in 3rd party apps ridiculous and nonsensical.

Very true in principle, but have you seen the ATV4 YouTube app? Hasn't been updated in nearly a year. Lacks basic functionality and for me personally vids stop randomly when skipping forward.

I'd pay good money for a robust 3rd party YouTube app on the system, and there is not a single alternative.

The situation is so ridiculous that I suspect shennanigans.

I'd pay good more for a robust OS on the system. Seriously, tvOS is the most buggy OS Apple ships. You'd be forgiven if you thought it was a damn beta.
