I thought I might upgrade from Mojave to Catalina, but after downloading the update, I decided not to update. How do I remove the update notification (the red-circled "1") from software update in preferences? The update icon and red-circled "1" also appear in my dock.

I have the same exact question. I DO NOT want to upgrade to Catalina and I want to get rid of the "red-circled 1". So disgusted with Apple and Tim Cook. Apple is a totally different company under his leadership. I used to upgrade ASAP and always buy the newest iPhone, but not after buying iPhone 6 and have it crash (as many others experienced) and Apple denying any problem.

I downgraded because software on which I depend has some 32-bit components, so it may not work if I move to Catalina. In any case, how do I get rid of the red-circled "1" from software update in preferences? Thanks.

Not a full solution, but one thing you can do is remove Preferences from your dock. Click-hold on it, and drag it upwards until a little cloud appears or it says 'Remove' and let go. Or right-click on it -> Options -> Remove from Dock.

This doesn't delete Preferences from your computer, just removes it from your dock. You can put back later if you want.

I generally open Preferences by pressing Command-space, and typing Prefer.. and it usually comes up very quickly, then pressing return to open it. No need to locate it then click on the icon.

Thanks, RedTomato. In Terminal I tried sudo softwareupdate --ignore "macOS Catalina." Software update now shows I'm up to date, but it didn't remove the red "1." I'm betting there is a Terminal command, or commands, that remove the "1," but that's way beyond my level of know-how. So the question remains, how do I remove that red "1"?

Do you have some other pending update? Like the Safari update? I'm holding off on that one. If you've correctly done the "ignore", when you open the Update panel, Catalina won't be listed any more. Try bouncing the Dock and see if it goes away.

No other pending updates. Catalina is no longer listed, but the red "1" is still there.

Bouncing the Dock? If you mean turning the bounce off, I did that, to no avail.

Update: Just tried bogdanw's suggestion, and it worked! The "1" is gone! Thanks!
