I have a Macbook Pro that I bring to work everyday where I also have an eGPU. The worst thing about this is when I'm going home. It wants me to safely eject the eGPU and by that, also closing all applications using the eGPU. Having to open up everything again next day.

What's the deal here? Why is it not safe to just unplug?

Sometimes I've unplugged it by mistake, but nothing seemed affected by that. Is there a hazard for the hardware or is it a matter of software corruption?

It has to with the Unix systems mount externals, as user you must eject mounted items by dragging the mounted drives to the Trash Can or and Finder menu program drop down to unmount their drive!

The external GPU is not a disk.

Applications that require or are using the external GPU may crash if the GPU is disconnected while they’re running. If the application crashes, you may lose data when it does.
