I managed to keep my MB looking great since buying it several months ago. I plan on using a magic eraser or something similar to clean it when I start to notice dirt on it.

Would it be a bad idea to remove the top case and disconnect the trackpad cable before cleaning it [palmrest and keys]. I figured that I could give it a better scrubbing and not have to worry about getting moisture inside. This would only be a once a year thing.

You don't want to get moisture in the keyboard or trackpad assembly either. They seem to be far less tolerant of wet than the rest of the computer.
