In my login items, I noticed two entries that are apparently remnants from uninstalled apps. I know I could hide them, but how do I ensure that they are deleted?

When I worked in Windows, I used a terrific program called Revo Uninstaller. That's not available for Mac. Does anyone know of anything similar, and ideally free, for Mac?

Don't use the the checkbox to hide the two login items. Select 'ClamXav Sentry', press the minus sign next to the plus to delete it. Repeat it with 'WDDriveUtilityHelper'. You just hide login items that should work in background, not login items that aren't existing anymore and can't get shown in the Finder by right clicking on them.

Usually there are some plist files related to the login items in those two folders:
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
I suggest that you first make a backup of those ClamXav and WD plist files there, instead of deleting them directly.

There are many uninstaller or cleaner apps in the Mac App Store. Some are offered for free from time to time. Beware that most of these tools do have the potential forcing you to throw away files you'll still need, if you don't use them with caution. If you're planning to make intensive use of such apps, always have a recent system backup ready. From my experience, most of those extra maintaining tools aren't necessary, especially if there is no real problem around. There are some good tools for the Mac, but in general macOS should be almost maintenance-free.

They already are deleted. At least that's how it looks to me. I'm going by the fact that the "Kind" column shows "Unknown", which means the kind can't be determined.

I suggest clicking once on the yellow triangle on the right side of each item. It may provide details.

To delete an item from the list, select the item and then click the - that should become ungrayed in the combined + - control that's below the list and the descriptive text.

Just because an item is in the "Login Items" list doesn't mean it still exists.

The "Login Items" list is exactly that: a list. Specifically, it's a list of items that will automatically be opened at login. You add or remove items from the list. If you delete an item from its original location (e.g. uninstall an app, or remove an alias file), then the item is still listed in the "Login Items" list. It can't be opened at login, because there's nothing at the original location.

Thanks, organicCPU and chown33. I appreciate the advice.

Thanks, prisstratton. I see that post is from October 2010. Is it still relevant?
