I haven't consciously paid enough attention to my posts to see if and which ones have been deleted. That said, if I felt enough personal interest invested in a post that I discovered had been deleted... I'd do as others have suggested:

PM a mod/'god' and see what happened and why.

Keeps things neat and polite w/out dragging the rest of the forum into the fray.

Yes, I agree, and also that also makes a lot less work for the mods, as they'd only have to send messages to people that mind. Most people don't care (or don't even look) whether their posts are deleted. If you do care, PM a mod and they can PM you back with a reason. Then the rest of us won't end up with PMs saying why posts have been deleted when it's not a massive problem for us.

PM a mod and ask, and you will indeed have a PM saying why your post was deleted. :p

I don't see what the big deal is. I've had the occasional post deletion and all I think is "meh". I just don't know why people find it so shocking.

I think insanelygreat brought up a good point that pointing out someone mistake and telling him/her what's wrong is better in the long run. However, not every people listens well here, in spite of rules being set up. I think unless if that post contains some important information or is a rather lengthy post, then it would deserve a pm or some sort of reply if deleted, else it would be a waste of resources if each and individual deleted post needs a pm.

It's especially important if the whole post consisted of "yes" or "agree" or an emoticon with no text. It's difficult to believe that would be deleted without some explanation, right? :D

Correct ... such an action would require that our thinking caps be worn all day long.

perhaps, then, less posts should be deleted.

you do know all those posts deleted also include the selling spam, posting marketplace things not in marketplace because you have less than 100 posts and also the porn.

The moderators do a wonderful job here. Sure there are a few things that could be tweaked a bit, but what doesn't need a tweak or two.

They do much better than at any forum i have ever been to

Including my own site

I've always considered Slashdot.org an example of what happens when everything goes wrong. :p
Not everything is wrong about /., the one thing they got right, IMHO, is the open, granular moderation. You can clearly see how the "mods" came to score a post in a particular way.

Being able to add/substract points for particular types of moderation on a user basis is very useful. It helps find those posts that are both informative and funny, as well as rescuing some posts that were modded "Troll" and "Funny" from the wasteland that is -1.

Simply deleting the posts remedies the situation of the moment but does nothing for the long term. Had I not asked why my post was deleted I may very well have made the mistake again and never been the wiser.

I think you make a good point, but I also empathize with the workload on the moderators. The main reason I read the "Site and Forum Feedback" section is for this reason: I learn about how to be a good MR member, the issues other MR members/moderators/etc face and the mistakes I want to avoid.

Ok why is this even becoming an issue, the original post in question got a simple explanation and now its become a presidential debate, posts get deleted people move on life goes on no big deal.
