Most of the time when ClamXAV finds an infected file on a Mac, it's infected with Windows malware, which is far more common than Mac malware. Windows malware has no effect on Mac OS X. ClamXAV will usually name the malware found, so you can look it up and find details about it. There are no Mac OS X viruses in the wild, but there are a handful of trojans in the wild. Lists those as the "infected files" and says that I can either deal with them myself or scan again with preferences set to move them into a different folder.
I recommend that you avoid using Sophos, as it could actually increase your Mac's vulnerability, as described here and here.
If you still want to run antivirus for some reason, ClamXav (which is free) is one of the best choices, since it isn't a resource hog, detects both Mac and Windows malware and doesn't run with elevated privileges.
