I am planning a road trip this summer with the wife and kids and am having trouble with one leg of the journey. Reno to Salt Lake is a 7 hour drive and that is just a bit too much for us. Does anyone know if there is something along the way to provide some interest and is there any recommended places to spend the night?

Not much to stop and see along the way. When I moved cross-country, I stayed at the Motel 6 in Elko...that's about halfway. It was fine...a normal Motel 6.

We were coming in the opposite direction, and we had stayed in Rock Springs, WY the night before, so we had a full day drive to Elko, and then had the short drive to Reno the next day to give us a chance to stop by the casinos before heading on to SF the next day.

Lots of desert along the way.
In Wells, Nevada there is a soccer field if you are interested in playing soccer and brought a soccer ball.
In Wendover, Nevada there is a lot of casinos and restaraunts. You should check that place out too.

Wendover is a place to stay, although I can't say it's all that exciting. It's a short drive from Wendover to SLC (about 100 miles or so) so you that would shorten up your drive, then the next day you could get up in the morning and still basically have a full day in SLC (assuming you're stopping here for a while). Really though, for the most part, Reno<->SLC is a pretty desolate/boring stretch of road.
