I believe I read on another thread recently that you can only watch the rented movie on the device you rented it on. So since you rented it on your MacBook Air, you are only allowed to watch it on there. If you try watching it on your Apple TV you will have to rent it again.

If you buy it you can watch it on anything that is logged in with your AppleID.

I could be mistaken on this though.

I rented a movie on my MacBook Air and tried playing it on my ATV4 but can't find it. Where are the rented films on an ATV4 please

1. download movie to your MBA
2. stream the movie from your MBA to your ATV.
(unless you copy the movie from your MBA to the ATV4, cause it has built in RAM, like you can with an iPad)

All I know is you can only have the rented movie on 1 device at a time . so if you're not streaming or can't stream from your MBA to your ATV - you'll have to hook-up through iTunes and transfer the movie to the ATV from the MBA.

It is not possible to transfer a downloaded rental movie from a computer or iOS device to an ATV4. If OP has already downloaded the movie in iTunes, streaming (either via Airplay triggered from iTunes, or via Homesharing and the Computers app) is the only option for watching on the ATV. If the movie was rented on the ATV4, there will be a rental section in the TV app.

Here's an overview of the various options:
