several weeks ago my long time problematic mbp decided that it wouldn't boot , would boot to the grey screen then go black and shut down, i googled the c$#* out of it and found it was a drive error so i tried several different things before i ended up doing "fsck_hfs -rf /dev/disk ect...." chugged thought that and came back disk un repairable so i ran it again and Rebooted and it came back to life. Since then i ran disk warrior on it a few times and thought the issue was over. Of course as always ive had several kernel panics since then, firefox has crashed about 120 times as usual and my new thunderbolt drive no longer shows up in the system.

Today the grey screen comes back, tried the same fsck thing a few times and rebooted and it took foreverrrrrrrr but eventually it worked thought the loading bar and got to the login screen.

What i want to know is why does this keep happening, is this a sign that my ssd is going bad. is it tied in with my every other day kernel panics or pile of other annoying issues.

Should i add some kernal panic logs to this?

system specs
early 2011 mbp
boot drive - 250g ssd ( cand remember brand)
secondary - 750g (stock drive came with it)
2.2 i7
16g ddr3 (aftermarket)
osx 10.7.5

That sounds very much like your SSD is dying. Hopefully you have a good backup so you don't lose data.

It is also possibly, but less likely, a bad drive cable.

If you have data in there you want off, be careful about doing repair disk of fsck over and over as that can make data retrieval more difficult.

doing a new tm backup right now, might also attempt an image. But that was my fear that the ssd was dead. Who makes the best ssd now days?

Samsung 840 EVO and Crucial M500 are pretty popular around here. Grab whichever you can find cheapest.

just noticed that after two days playing with my thunderbolt lacie 2big raid and it not showing up in disk util that after the crash and fsck that its now showing up again.

I had basically decided that it was a hardware issue on the lacie itself. This just keeps getting weirder. Also when the drive was not working the displayport to dvi adapter plugged into the lacie TB port wouldn't work at all, and when it did the monitor just toggled back and forth between sleep and powered on every few seconds

Is your SSD in the main drive bay or the optical drive bay? 2011 MBP's have known issues with SSD's in the optical bay. Have you tried replacing the aftermarket RAM with the factory RAM and see if there is any differences.

Does this look like an ssd issue or the external drive issue ( which i just got gtech fw800 drive)

will try backup to lacie thunderbolt.

i think it may be in the optical bay i think my logic at the time was that the original bay would provide better cooling for the dive with moving parts.

2011 MBP's have known issues with SATA III drives int the optical bay. This is a likely cause of a lot of your issues. This from OWC:

"Testing has demonstrated that Apple factory hardware does not reliably support a 6G (6Gb/s) Solid State Drive or Hard Disk Drive in the optical bay of 2011 MacBook Pros (ModeI ID8,1; 8,2; 8,3). If your OWC Data Doubler bundle comes with a 6G drive, you should ONLY install that drive in the main drive bay and utilize the Data Doubler to re-task your existing drive or install a new 3G SSD or HDD in the optical bay. PRE-2011 models can utilize a 6G drive in the optical bay, but will do so at a reduced 3G (3Gb/s) speed."
