So my parents recently bought me a 2011 MBP to replace my aging early 2008 15" MBP. In return, I was supposed to give them the old MBP to replace one of their home computers. As luck would have it, the logic board on the old MBP went kaput, and I was told it would be $310 to repair it (I'm out of warranty at this point).
Question is, should my parents get the MBP repaired or should I just tell them they're better off buying a new Mac Mini for a few hundred more? As far as I know, they'll only be using it at home, so portability is not really an issue.
Some notes on the '08 MBP:
-Base model 15" w/ 2.4 GHz C2D, 200 GB hard drive, and 4 GB RAM
-Has the infamous NVIDIA 8600m GT, so even if the logic board is repaired, there's a possibility for further failure
-Doesn't seem to qualify for a free repair due to GPU failure as it doesn't even turn on (everything spins up for a second or two before abruptly shutting down)
-Superdrive doesn't work
