lol... it's a feature! Battery Health Monitoring as hardware implementation... amazing!

Q: How do I know my Apple Watch Battery needs servicing?
A: It will pop open and show you the battery

Seriously... anything that has that short battery life will accumulate a lot of cycles in a short time. Typically, Lithium Cobalt Oxide (commonly known as LCO) are done after 500-1000 cycles. Other chemistry, most notably Lithium NMC, can double that and is more safe in operation and can deal better with high currents (quick charge!).
Yet, even Boeing was stupid enough to choose LCO over safer technology (in the aviation one could expect LFP), which grounded the entire 787 fleet. The Note 7 disaster was just another good example why use of LCO should be discontinued preferably asap. The good news here is, that thanks to Tesla and other e-car manufacturers (who realize that LCO is not state of the art), other chemistry is more widely used.
Tim Cook: "We like to think of the feature as a reminder built right into the display to remind customers it's time to buy another  watch"

Happened to my stainless steel first gen a couple of weeks ago. The genius looked at it for a couple of seconds and said it was probably the battery that got swollen. They sent it away and I got a refurbished watch 6 days later. Glad they've increased the warranty for that issue.

Also have a series 0 SS that is having battery issues as of the last week or two.

Try re-booting. Might fix it.

I'll give that a try

Number one, Apple already has reduced the price with Series one for the Sport model at $269 from when it first started off at $350/$400, which was the base model for the first generation Apple Watch.

You sound ignorant with what the Apple Watch already does from your previous post. The Apple Watch acts as a "Mini iPhone" , which is an intercessor from the iPhone and is a direct reflection of with messages, E-mails, calls, third party application notifications.

Without your iPhone nearby (or connected to the same WiFi), your watch won't do any of those.

Ask yourself how often are you parted far enough away from your iPhone on a daily basis where the Apple Watch wouldn't be useful? Likely not very far. The Apple Watch has a decent range, especially when connected to wifi. But are we in a position where we need the Apple Watch to be an "iPhone"? Where as Apple designed the Apple Watch to be a bridge from the iPhone, NOT a replacement.

This is good news... as this just happened to mine as well:

Not a replacement, but a more independent accessory, so that I can leave the phone in the locker when I am in the gym, or leave the phone at home when I go out for a leisure walk after dinner, or when I go out for a two-hour biking, or working in the far end of the backyard (where my WiFi doesn't reach), etc.

Then that would require LTE, which is rumored for Series 3 this Fall.

Doubtful. I think he was just saying that that he had originally thought his was caused by sweat.

Apple has recently said that they create artificial sweat to make sure the Apple Watch and its bands do not transfer too much nickel. Not sure they test gaskets with it though :)

I think that's more likely. Or even regular charging.

It's long been known that the sensor pod can be pushed out by a swelling battery. It sounds like when the pod glue is good enough, then it pushes out the front instead!

You are right. Battery swelling hadn't crossed my mind. But because I'd noted in the past how crap Apple's polymer selections were (After a couple years, my iPhone bumper turned to embrittlement goo; after a couple years and less than a dozen uses, the strain relievers on my 80$ premium ear buds did the same); so I assumed the adhesive failed (even though the display/housing joint was further from my skin than on the other examples.)

If they paid $10-20k w/tax for a gold Apple Watch and they aren't millionaires I have no sympathy at all for them. Everyone knew that a smart watch, especially a first generation one, was a disposable device with a very limited life span from the start. Having a gold case didn't make it more special, valuable nor collectable. Hell gold watches in general depreciate heavily except for specific brands and models. For those whom that money is change they got exactly what they paid for. Everyone else dumb enough to have bought one instead of a SS sports Rolex hopefully learned something. The melt value might be around $800 if they're lucky, while the Rolex would still have 80-90% of its value if bought new and nearly 100% or more if bought used. Even SS Apple watches are a bad buy. The sport provides the tech and at $400 or less and you get what you pay for over 2-3 years.

The Swiss watch industry has seen a decline because of slowdowns in China and other markets that were buying luxury goods like crazy, not because of smart watches. For the high-end mechanical watch buyer, a smart watch is just a fitness accessory. Not even quartz could kill the industry. Buyers are attracted to the craft, tradition and the status that are associated with these watches. Besides demand for Rolex, Patek and AP is as high as ever with 4-5 yr wait lists for hot models. It's the others that have seen a decline in revenue.

Everybody I know, including myself, with lux Swiss watches, relegates them to hanger queen status after they get hooked on their Apple Watch. Peak Swiss watch was reached a few years ago and it ain't coming back. Greetings from a guy in Switzerland.

This happened to my watch! They (Apple) didn't tell me it was the battery. It happened while I was sitting in a meeting, not doing anything. After the support people querying me on whether I had gotten it wet, dropped it, etc., they agreed to send me a replacement and I sent the old one back. Who knew?!?
This happened to mine as well. Normally in Europe, we get up to 6 years consumer rights protection, meaning that if your Watch breaks inexplicably, it gets fixed/replaced for free. In my case, because I bought it in the US, I didn't have this protection, and it took quite a bit of 'kicking a fuss' and escalating things to get Apple to repair it.

It just seemed completely bizarre that the screen popped off without any impact or physical damage (and it continued to work).

Good to know what happened now. I'd have been furious if I paid £230 to fix it then.

My first gen apple watch has frozen three times in 18 months where each time it has had to be sent off for repair.
If at any stage they refused to fix this i would be massively annoyed

This may be the case for some but I wear my GMT Master II daily and my Day Date for more formal occasions. Looking to add a white ceramic Daytona (hard to find even in Switzerland!) and blue Royal Oak very soon! I bought an Apple Watch S1 for $229 a couple of months ago. Tried it for a couple of days and while it does lots of stuff it's not the same as having a nice watch on my wrist. Sometimes I put it on my right wrist for fun or when I go jogging but that's about it.

I'm actually looking forward to visiting your country by the end of the month. I'll be staying in Germany for most of my trip but will drive to Lausanne. I can't get enough of the scenery. Really beautiful country!

Cheap offshore batteries? Ha! Would the US-made ones be any better? Weird, non-sequitur comment.

Well, curiously, in the last few days, my original edition has started acting weird. Every few hours, its like someone is mashing the power button. And I start getting the alert that it is about to start making emergency calls and texting my emergency contacts. Anyone ever seen reports of anything like that?

I have most definitely had that issue. At first, I though the side button was being held in, so I turned off hold to call under the Emergency SOS section. The calls continued, so I took the watch off my wrist and placed it in the tank bag of my motorcycle in a secure area so it would not be pressed or anything. The calls continued, so I had to shut it down until I could get a genius bar appointment.

They had me wipe it and set it up as a new watch, but emergency calls and texting was happening much more frequently than every few hours, it was like every 3-5 minutes. 27 calls in all before we got it wiped.

No problems since, but I upgraded to a Series 2 after that, so it gets worn seldomly

I rest mine as a new watch, too. But the problems are still happening. Only problem is that it can happen all day long on some days, and then days will pass before the problem shows up against. Genius bar booked for later today.

I noticed my screen popped off this past Friday when grabbing my watch from the dock. I don't have AC+ and have an appointment with Genius bar today at 5pm. Two questions.

Are they going to replace the watch there or send it out like software issues? Should I expect to pay anything?

Glad I did my googles and found this thread before walking in to my appointment blind.

My experience from Australia here:

My 42mm Space Grey Apple Watch screen came off last night. However, I am unsure if it was the result of an expanded/swollen battery. I went to the Apple Store in Broadway (Sydney) and let them know of my issue. They let me know that I was 10 days outside the Australian consumer law (2 years) but they decided to have it sent off for repair free of charge (It would've been $279 AUD). We will see what happens in the next few weeks.

Update: They sent my watch to be repaired/replaced. Wish apple could handle watch repairs in-store like other Mac products, specifically iPhones. Or just replace the watch since its covered instead of shipping it out.

Hoping to get it returned soon.

Just noticed it on my first gen. Taking it to the Apple Store today, hearing reports they are denying repairs at some stores. We will see.

Update: The Apple Store accepted it to be sent for repair. 249 fee waived under "Warranty Status: Quality Program (E1)".

Final update: Received my watch yesterday afternoon and it was replaced, not repaired. Dropped off at Apple on Monday at 5:30pm received full replacement watch Thursday. Short turnaround and great customer service that costed me $0.

Is it a gen 1 watch?

I received a "new" gen 1 watch with no band in a white Apple Watch box. New serial with same finish and screen. I'm sure it's a refurb but it was a free repair.

I was wondering what would happen if my SS ever exhibits this issue.

I just dropped off my wife's first gen sport at the Apple Store with the same quality program (E1) and 0 fee thing, but the work order says she's getting a series 1 replacement. I wonder if Apple does this so it can then gut all the first gen internals it gets back (from sport and Watch alike) for Watch refurbs.

The price drop on the series 1 obviously suggests the new SOC is much cheaper for them to manufacture so this would make sense.
