repairing with my install disk

Hi,

My disk utility app said it have to repair my main hard drive: Macintosh HD
Now i know I have to start up my macbook with the disk in it (and holding option if i'm not mistaken), and then selecting it from a menu.

But what exactly is repairing my hard drive? will it reinstall snow leopard and remove all my files? or will nothing happen at all

It will repair the file system and NOT remove any of your data and it will NOT reinstall Mac OS X.
