Despite ejecting my external SSDs before switching off and removing them, I keep receiving the notification shown at the top r.h. corner of the screenshot. This usually occurs when I re-insert the external drive and then boot up. Any suggestions as to why this should be happening?

I find that it can often take awhile for a drive to actually be dismounted after ejecting. I see this with a couple 2tb Samsung T7 USB SSD's on my 2018 Mini. When I shut down, I just leave the drives connected and wait until the Mac powers off before disconnecting them.
 
This notification appears at the exact moment when you connect your external SSD to your Mac? I assume that "G Drive" is the name of your external SSD?
Is the external SSD turned on at the moment you are connecting? What is the power situation? (External Power for the SSD or bus-powered?) Is there a 3rd-party hub involved?

My guess would be, that the SSD connects, tries to boot, but there is not enough power, so it disconnects immediately. Few seconds later it connects again automatically and boots successfully.

I had a similar problem, when I tried to connect a specific USB enclosure to my Mac. It "overloaded" the USB bus, so all other USB hard disks were disconnected. After a few seconds the USB bus resets itself and all disks come back. (but of course I get the notification, that all drives were not properly ejected.)

Thanks for the reassuring replies, but I was just concerned that the drive might become corrupted. I normally plug in the drive with the hub switched off and then switch it on. In future I shall allow more time before removing the drive from the socket, and see if there is an improvement. I keep a back-up copy just in case.

My reply was not intended to be reassuring. Sorry for misleading you.
You should absolutely be worried about corruption.
Every time this message appears, the drive has a chance to be corrupted. You should take every precaution possible to avoid this message!

I've had this issue recently too. Running 12.0.1 and I've gotten the notification with a Samsung T5 as well as a LaCie Rugged. Both are connected to my 2018 15" MBP through an OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock. The LaCie I managed to get rid of the repeated "not ejected properly" problem by setting my Mac to not shut down hard drives while in sleep (solution from LaCie) but I worry about long-term effects of this fix. I did not have this problem before moving to Monterey, and didn't have the problem with the Samsung until recently using the laptop while traveling. Opened it up today to a "[drive] not ejected properly" message despite having ejected before unplugging when last used.

Thanks for the input. Leaving the drive plugged in for longer after ejecting seems to have helped, but I shall just have to be diigent when unplugging. As I said previously, I keep double back-ups of everything ever since I had a bad experience some time ago.
