I have had my series 4 since 2019 but after 4.5 years of use, the battery is no longer holding a charge for a full day. Battery indicates that it requires servicing and current capacity is 78%. Cost to have Apple replace the battery is $135+tax.

The series 4 does everything I need, and considering there hasn't really been any significant changes in some time, not sure if it is worth it to spend the $400+ to upgrade to a newer series like a series 7 or 8. Would rather wait another year or two for more significant upgrade. Any thoughts?

I just looked at the apple support section and it was $99 US for the Series 4 model. Not sure where you are located, but the link below is what I used with the drop down menus. When I replaced the battery for my 5 series (pre-price increase this summer) they sent me a refurb that looked new.

There have been recent sales on new Series 8 models between 200-250 depending on size. I'd bet there will be similar and maybe even better sales during BF. Another $100 to upgrade four generations newer would be money well spent.

AW4 will likely lose OS upgrades in a year, maybe maybe 2, if that is not important for you…
Do you use/need ECG? If no, I’d suggest an on sale SE.
And you statement of “no significant changes” is plain wrong, look at what capabilities you get today, someone here posted a table…

Hmm, might wait and see if there are any good Black Friday sales. In Canada, a 45MM Series 8 is going for around $500. Battery replacement will be about $150 taxes in, so still would be around $300 extra to upgrade to the Series 8. Might consider an SE in that case if there are good promotions in a few weeks.

We just sent my wife’s series 4 in for a battery replacement and they did send back a refurb that looks and functions as new. $113 with tax and shipping charges from Apple.

Does this refurbished watch have WatchOS 9 or 10 on it?

I think that’s a smart choice. If you don’t want the features of the new watches then ~$100 for a refurbished device with a new battery is a good deal.

It came to us with 10.0.1 on it. I think they upgrade them before shipping. It has 10.1 on it now after I upgraded it.
Thank you. This is sad. I wanted to use this trick to replace my S4, which is unusable with WatchOS 10. And get a refurbished one with WatchOS 9.

No fate. Apple pushes hard to 10.
