Replace color in CS3

I have a picture of a piece of metal, against a manila paper backround. However, the paper is too dark. Is there a way I can replace the manila picture with just plain white?

If you just want to have the BG be white, you can extract the piece of metal fairly easily. Just go to Filter -> Extract, highlight all the edges of the metal, and fill the part that you want to keep.
