I am also curious if/how I should upgrade. I currently have a 12 mini with pretty awful battery life and plan on upgrading soon. Would it be a better idea to get the 16e, or buy a renewed (excellent condition) 15 pro on Amazon for $639? I am not sure if the newer chip and the fact that the 16e would be new rather than refurb outweighs the 120hz screen and far better cameras of the 15 pro. I do not care about visual intelligence at all so I am a bit torn on this decision
You don't get visual intelligence either way. The jump from mini to pro size wise will definitely be different, as has been mentioned. I would go for it and try it out. Use it and make sure everything works and that you like the size/weight of the pro. If it doesn't work out for you, then you know more about what you like and can send it back.

Backup your data locally on your computer and free up some space on your current iPhone instead of downgrading.
Also y’all when I did my upgrade to the 15 pro as I knew Apple Intelligence requires some more space to install all generative capabilities on the iPhone I went for the next storage option up from 128 to 256gb. I used about a little past half the storage on my iPhone XR that was 128gb.

USB-C!!! Use an external HDD for more storage for your 15 pro. Sandisk has a 1TB storage capacity for a good price.
Y’all this is for the win. The universal aspects of USB-C.

Fun fact: I got a USB C hub and reverse charged my Apple Watch from my iPhone.

I'm personally not a big fan of refurbished by anyone other than Apple. There's just so many risks and keep in mind that these devices have an aftermarket battery or ar nearing the 80% battery health mark. So you might need to get the battery replaced within 6 months.

I would suggest to wait a bit longer if you can. I keep an Anker magsafe compatible power bank with me whenever I leave the house, making sure my iPhone 12 easily manages to get me trough the day. The iPhone 16E is a dissapointment imo so I might just get my battery replaced instead of upgrading.

Does this mean that the new 17 series will have like a huge gain on battery life with that new modem? It’s a welcome change to me.

Yes you do. iPhone 16e supports visual intelligence via the action button.

EDIT- looks like Apple just announced that visual intelligence is coming to the iPhone 15 Pro as well.

In every way that’s a downgrade imo. I definitely wouldn’t do it, especially if you’ve already paid off your 15 Pro.

There is a reason it's being compared to the iPhone 11...
‘Cause y’all who had an iPhone XR and iPhone 11 know that it’ll not be compatible with iOS 19 this fall. It’s a more smarter move to get the 16 series or save on a 15 pro if y’all want to upgrade. No 16e. Y’all can still get the great nearly all day battery life, nice cameras and Apple intelligence, of course.

I had a iPhone 13 Pro Max which suffered the "White Screen of Death" issue about 3 months ago while in Indonesia. I had it repaired but with no guarantees that it would last. I have 1 month left in Australia before I return so due to the massive price of buying a replacement in Indonesia (no trade agreement with Apple) I have opted to purchase a 16e.
Given that the 13 Pro Max did not have Apple Intelligence and all my previous iPhones had been SE's this 16e is a massive upgrade in many ways for me.

The weight is great, the size is great (fits easily in my pocket) the speakers are great, better by far than the 13 pro max and my wife's 15 Pro Max for that matter. I have read others say even better than the 16 Pro as well. It has the same A18 series processor as iPhone 16 devices and although it still has the "notch" so did my 13 Pro Max and it wasn't a Dynamic Island either so no great loss there for me but it does have Facial Recognition which is a step up from my previous iPhone SE models. The camera does everything I want it to do and the battery life is fantastic for a 6.1" iPhone, comparable to my wife's 15 Pro Max meaning I'm getting 2 days heavy use between charges and that's with my full charge limited to 90%.

So, for AU$400.00 less than an iPhone 16 I consider it a pretty good option for me.

I am considering upgrading to the iPhone 16e from my 15P any suggestions on whether I should do it or not?
16 pro to the 16e on my end... amazing battery life. I'm a heavy user. My phone is running most of the time at work using navigation, audiobooks, music, etc. I do a lot of driving. Bought a 16e for my wife and I and used the proceeds from the 16 pro towards our phones. I mostly just sold the phone to put the money towards the two phones... only way I could talk my wife into upgrading her 13 mini for the better main lens and get the Apple AI integration with chat GPT, photos, etc. In central Florida on the T-mobile network I have had a consistently better signal on the 16e over my 16 pro. I have a stronger signal in areas of less coverage than I normally would and in dense city areas with the 16 pro. I have had better performance and cellular connectivity as well... not as fast (not noticeable), but seems that way because the C1 chip is optimized to prioritize whatever apps need it. Apple AI is the same, but nice to have. Speaker performance and call quality is about the same. The 16e feels amazing and noticeably lighter in the hand. I get by with the camera... takes just as good, if not better, photos during the day as the 16Pro's main lens. Personally, I think the 16e photos look better on the main lens; I use panoramic mode on the 16e to make up for the lack of wide lens, which distorts images anyway (fishbowl effect). One significant plus for me and I am not a fan of the camera control button on the non plus/max sizes... the button is right/near the hand placement of holding the phone and can be easily pressed (personal experience). Hope that helps. I am a fan, obviously. The 16e is a solid buy if you don't need the Dynamic Island, extra cameras, camera control, faster wireless charging (probably will allow your battery to last longer), and are ok with the aluminum frame over the titanium. I like how simple the phone is and it just works... very well. It has been as good of an experience in day to day use as the 16 Pro... if not better due to the more consistent and stronger cellular connectivity.
