My Macbook has the StainGate issue. By now, the entire screen has become stained and can no longer be used sensibly. Unfortunately, the Macbook is no longer eligible for a free exchange. Apple wants to charge approximately 850 Euros ($1050) for service.

The question now is: What to do? The performance of the Macbook is actually still sufficient for me and the battery is still good (450 cycles, 85%, changed two years ago). Should I replace the screen or buy a new machine? In case of a new machine, I would choose the 13,3 rMBP TB, as 15,4 was always a little to bulky for my use case.

Any advice?

My clamshell was damaged by a vandal a couple of years ago. It's a MBP mid-2012, i7. I replaced the screen and was good to go. In my case, the newer Macbook keyboard is just a killer. I will say this much- shopping for the replacement clamshell was a pain in the rear because the prices were all over the place- from $110 to $1900 for the same part. I simply didn't see enough in the newer machines to be worth the price they asked.

Those are my thoughts. Others may (and occassionally will) see it differently. I'd love to know what you decide to do when you reach that point!

Just remove the coating or what's left of it. There will be little bit more glare but you get used to it soon.
