I have a work-provided AT&T smartphone with internet and email (but no calling) capabilities. If I get an iPhone that is not unlocked and not jailbroken, can I insert my SIM without any problems going forward? I assume the answer is yes, but wanted to know if anyone had done this before I buy one used.

    iPhone 2G: Yes.
iPhone 3G: No. The iPhone 3G requires you to have an iPhone 3G data plan.

Actually, i'm pretty sure that you have to activate the 2G as well. I have the 2G iPhone with AT&T and when you simply insert a SIM, I believe it will ask you to connect to iTunes no matter what. You would then have to unlock it for use without activating it though iTunes.

What if it's a SIM with 3G data capability for ATT? Wouldn't that work on 2G? I take it the answer for 3G is no.

It would probably work. But you still need a way to activate the iPhone. Either though AT&T, or jailbreak if you want to activate it without the new data plan.
