I have a 2017 iMac that I ordered from Apple with a VESA mount and no stand. Now, I need to put a stand on it.

However, when I take the VESA mount off, I see no bracket to attach the stand to.

Any tips or ideas on this?

On the 2012+ and later iMacs the stock stand and the VESA mount are not interchangeable. I think your only practical option is to use a VESA stand, unless perhaps you disassemble the iMac and make internal modifications. I think you need to open it up and install the Apple hinge mechanism (plus perhaps other parts):

I also would be interested if anyone else has found a practical workaround.

As wilberforce noted, you cannot install the Apple iMac stand on a VESA iMac because the internal mounting structures are different.

There are pure stands (not arms) that are VESA-compatible so that would be your best option if you no longer wish to use a monitor arm.

This is why I consider the "VESA mount" iMac to be an extremely unwise purchase.

It's appeal is so limited, it will be almost impossible to sell if the owner wishes to do so.

And... you're stuck with the VESA mounting scheme... forever.

I think OP still can purchase a dead iMac and salvage its original stand to replace the VESA mount.
They are using the same stand, don't they?
It will require re-assemble the whole iMac, but it's possible.
