We do know, simply by looking at the sales figures for the normal size phone. The mini was outsold by a factor of 12 meaning that the overwhelming majority of people were happy with the spec but wanted the larger device.

For the theory that people merely want higher spec phones to be true then the sales of the normal size unit would've been equally as low as the mini.
Did the 13 sell better than the 13 Pro? Did the 13 Plus sell better than the 13 Pro Max? I genuinely don’t know, I didn’t mean that sound come off as snarky - but it kind of does

Edit - there is no iPhone 13 Plus. My bad :/

Apple actually performed a tech miracle putting everything from iPhone 12 and 13 (6.1”) into much smaller chassis (5.4”) at the expense of smaller battery and worse heat management as it was. Where would you put that third camera? Give people even smaller battery to complain about?

Kudos to Apple for what they managed to make and simply a pity that more people did not appreciate (buy) into it.

It is as simple as that.
Then forgoing the third camera - what is their justification for not giving it the Pro chipset or a ProMotion display? Presumably those take up the exact same footprint

Feature segmentation, somewhat ridiculous to still be puttering at 60hz, but the screen has been the major material upgrade for the "Pro" models.

The exact same logic can be found in macbooks where only the "Pro" models can drive 2+ displays out of the box whereas the non apple silicon had no such cap.

Tengentially, that is what makes me excited about the vision pro, no technical jerrymandering, just great state of the art tech.

Because they never released a Pro version. Do most people want larger phones? Or do most people want higher-spec phones? We don’t know, because Apple only gave the Mini the lower-tier specs
Lower-tier specs? It has the same camera and processor as the normal 13.

The associated higher cost?

I feel that this is a common mistake made when consumers access consumption items. Goods are bound by economic laws such as Price elasticity and supply. As we've seen above a significant part the apple iphone sales are for items 1-2 generations old.

Adding killer features like a high refresh-rate display on the most consumer device would most probably hurt apple's chances to move all the remaining stock. And this logic does allow them to price their top tier devices increasingly higher by giving the consumer a feeling of linearity when accessing the very deliberately designed range of models.

There was a leaker somewhere that had linked a supposedly internal guidline for display tech. Pill for the regular iphones this year. And high refresh rate when the upper tier iphones are demarcated by another screen design.

I feel you, I ‘downgraded’ from a 13 Pro to a regular 12 simply because of how similar the features are (all the important ones are there in the 12), how much lighter it is (20%), and how little I was benefiting from the extra features of the Pro.

Having this 12 allows me to comfortably carry a slim magsafe battery (not the apple one) in my left pocket, and attach it whenever needed to essentially give me 170% of battery every day. The phone remains comfortably light even with the battery attached, which would not be the case with the 13 pro.

I may have ‘downgraded’, but the reality is that I now have a cheaper & lighter iPhone with a battery life longer than the 14 Pro and all the features I want, so it’s a lot more suitable for me.

Oh and as much as I like the 120HZ screen, it has never felt necessary. The screen of the 12 looks more than smooth enough to me.

I have just done the same thing today. I thought I was insane for “downgrading“ but I love the Mini and had to be real with myself on how often I use the “new” features within each release. Once the initial hype dies down, I always end up using my phone like I do every phone. As a phone.

...and it was the best decision I've ever made. I had been wanting to downsize from the Pro Max for awhile now, mainly due to the phone just feeling like a brick in my pocket & being virtually impossible for one handed use. I had also realized that the pro features (bigger battery, 120hz screen, camera) were no longer really important to me & didn't seem worth the unwieldy size trade-off. I think my use has changed over the past year or so. I realized that I've started to value portability & ease of use, over many of the fancier features.

I was originally planning on just waiting & picking up the regular 15 Pro. However, once I started doing research on the Mini, I thought it sounded like a perfect fit. It's odd because I had never even considered the phone before last week. I always just wrote it off due to it's size, not realizing that it's the phones greatest strength. Even with the trade-offs of the phone being 60hz (which is negligible after a day or two) & a smaller battery, I haven't had any regrets so far. This phone is simply a joy to use & I honestly don't ever see myself getting another Pro Max phone. And call me crazy, but I actually prefer the 13 notch over the Dynamic Island, just personal preference I guess. It's also nice having a physical SIM again. I'm not a fan of ESIM at all.

I write this because I see a lot of people complaining about the size & weight of the Pros. You guys should seriously consider checking out the Mini if you haven't. You may be surprised to find that some of the Pro features aren't really as necessary as you might think. The rumor is that Apple will pull the 13 Mini from the shelves after the 15 releases, so time may be limited. I will now be swapping between the Mini & my Galaxy Fold 5, when I need a big screen. I truly feel as I have the best of both worlds now.

I love my 13 Mini too and am not upgrading until Apple releases another model in this size. Using it one handed is way too important to me.

Out of interest, if Apple didn't replace it but Samsung did, would you go Android when your 13 mini ate it?

If Apple makes an iPhone mini Pro, I will buy it with my life savings.

I would go mini, except the pro features for me makes the Pro a better option for me. That is why I went from 13 > 14 Pro because my phone use case changed within a year.

I made a thread about hating the size of the 6s Plus, and dropping down to the SE.

With two hands on it, I liked the 6s Plus, but it was very hard to use one handed, which was probably 90% of the time.

It didn't fit in some of my pockets, and I started shopping for clothing that would accommodate my giant phone.

With my older cars, the large iPhone didn't fit in the storage areas (cup holders, ashtrays, etc.), with the only option for me was to place it on the passenger side seat. The phone would fly off the seats when driving around sharp curves.

I liked the Camera and great battery life, but the trade off of the larger size was not worth it.

I bought my wife an iPhone SE1 when it launched, and an Otterbox Defender case (she cracked the screen of her last two iPhones). When putting the case on her new phone, I was a little envious of the size of the SE1. It was so light, small, and perfect for my hand. I would have purchased one that day for myself, but didn't want to drop to a smaller storage size. When the 128GB version of the SE1 launched in 2017, I got it.

The Touch ID was slightly slower in the SE1, and maybe the battery life was slightly worse, but it was well worth it to drop to the smaller size.

As my SE1 aged, and the A9 started to struggle, I decided to try the 13 Mini. I dislike Face ID, but overall, I like the phone.

The battery life on the 13 Mini is amazing for my usage. I hardly ever charge it, just mainly on my commute.

The size is a good compromise.

Not sure what I will do next. I will keep my Mini for a very long time, and maybe buy another while I still can to have incase mine breaks.

I envy you all. I so badly wanted a 13 mini when it first came out. I tried using my 14 PM as my primary device for half a year and just could not. Went back to MBP and iPad for primary daily usage. Now, I wish I had something lighter to lug around. My 14 PM pulls my shorts down when I walk. It is not comfortable to hold when hiking or walking for hours and hours. But when I want that battery life, it is REALLY nice (all day work flights).

Still, I'd rather go for portability and have a battery in my backpack if needed.

Y'all with 13 mini - can do dual e-sims right?

Yes all 13 models support dual eSIMs

13 Mini - Best iPhone apple ever made as far as I'm concerned!

How was the mini "hamstrung"? It had the same specs as the 13 which sold very well. The majority of people want larger phones and the sales figures bore this out.
It was hamstrung by not having the telephoto lens (which I would have gladly taken in place of the useless ultrawide) and lack of ProMotion display.

The iPhone 14 Plus has had dismal sales too. People don't want big phones, they want "Pro" phones. Make a "Pro mini" and it would sell better.

In many countries the standard 13 / 14 outsold it's Pro Max and Pro variants.

Generally speaking, people who want a small phone are willing to sacrifice the tradeoffs for the smaller form factor, especially as no rival phone exists with similar specs.

Likely due to cost. In the US, most people get subsidized phones through carriers and pay a fraction of MSRP, and then finance the rest through AT&T/Verizon/T-Mobile over 36 months.

People often don't have those financing options in other countries. Thus, a $1200 phone in local currency is a lot more difficult to shell out all at once, compared to the average American who can afford to buy it when Verizon gives you $800 off for trading in your old phone, then lets you finance the remaining $400 across 36 months for an affordable $11/mo tacked onto your phone bill.

I would say that those people are in the minority. I was one of them. And everyone else I talked to, except one friend of mine, who expressed interested in the mini for its size ended up going with the Pro specifically because they didn't want to forego features for the more desirable size. If anything, the sales performance of the Plus finally proves that definitively: people still chose the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max over the 14 and 14 Plus. While there is a market for larger phones, the vast majority of buyers simply want what they perceive as "the best." And as it turns out, the only phones Apple has ever made that carry the "Pro" moniker have always been the largest of each model year's lineup.

And again, this gravitation toward the "Pro" models is especially prevalent in the US where trade-in and financing offers put $1000+ phones within reach of many working and middle class folks who would otherwise never be able to afford them, and would otherwise be forced to buy older or "non-Pro" iPhone models, or less expensive Android smartphones. They opt for the "Pro" models because of the name, regardless of the fact that most will never take advantage of, or appreciate the better camera or display, and would be equally well-served by a less expensive model. Heck, I know people who have the 13 Pro and didn't even notice the difference in the smoothness of the display, coming from their old XS. Had there been a "13 Pro mini" or "14 Pro mini," it would have unquestionably sold far better than the 14 Plus on name alone. Not to mention potential sales from the many who compromised and bought an unwieldy and heavy 13 Pro because the 13 mini didn't include the telephoto lens or ProMotion display.

I would seriously consider it.
I would look at the ASUS Zenphone 10 personally, but I don't think Apple will ever NOT release a small phone for the market. It might just never have the latest and greatest features they offer on the bigger models.

The issue with the Zenphone as still the case with many android phones not made by Samsung is the limited software updates. Still a ridiculous situation on that side in where 3 OS updates is considered 'great' in where apple supports even their 'budget' phones for much longer.
