I have completely disabled Time Machine on my Mac for the same reasons as the OP's, even though I have a firewire 800 1Tb. drive connected to my iMac. For one thing, I don't want every version of everything I ever create left on the back-up. There are files that I delete that I don't want back-ups kept.
The other reason I don't use Time Machine is because it was either constantly running backing up or spinning up the add-in hard drive which definitely slowed my system down every time. I tried disabling Time Machine but the iMac still continued to poll the peripheral drive every so often which, again slowed my system down.

I bought a copy of SuperDuper! and I only connect my back-up drive once per week to do my weekly back-up. The rest of the time it is disconnected and turned off (makes too much noise anyway). Apple needs to do some tweaking of TimeMachine before I will use it again.

Slow time Machine and network

Hi, the same ting happenes with mytime Machine. When i reboot it it works fine for some time, but after a short period of time it is slow agian. Sometime the network stops complete. I have a iMac and my childeren has 3 new wireless Apple machines, and the same happens with them.

I have set up an alternative Wireless Network with the exact the same settings, and this is fast as the lightning.

Help?

Morten

Hi all,

not sure what the problem is here. I replaced my AEBS with a 500gb time machine, and my internet is SLOW. Not just during backups, but... all the time! I've searched around online and others seem to be having some issues similar to mine. What about you all? has anyone replaced an AEBS with a Time Machine and found network performance to be slow?? Thanks!

And i should re-state. Network throughput is fine. Transferring files between computers is no big deal, but the actual internet surfing is VERY slow.
