My optical drive in my late 2008 MacBook Pro has completely stopped working. I would like to order a replacement but I'm not sure which one. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to which one would be my best option? Thanks for your help 🙂

You can buy a external Optical drive from Apple.
And replace your original optical drive with Optibay.
But if you really want a optical drive for your bay here it is:

Thank you for both great suggestions 🙂 I went to both ifixit and then ebay. All the drives I found were of the used variety. I don't necessarily have a problem with this. But it doesn't make much sense to me to buy the same kind of drive that has already failed in my MBP. I would rather spend a little more and upgrade to a newer more reliable one if at all possible. Can someone please let me know if there is a upgrade compatible with 17" MacBook Pro model A1229? Thanks again for the help 🙂
