Hi,

I've had an Apple Time Capsule (2TB) model since 2015 that I originally used as my wireless/wired router along with the internal drive used for Time Machine backups (Two MBP) and general file storage. I've only been using it purely for backup purposes for the last year since I put in a new Netgear Orbi system though. That being said, I know that these drives don't last forever so I'm looking for a replacement.

I'm using roughly 1.7TB at the moment, so I'd like to target at least a 4TB sized drive. Any suggestions? I don't need a full blown RAID setup or anything of the sort, and it will be plugged in via ethernet as well.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I'm using a WD passport 4TB connected via USB to the Airport unit, select it as an additional disk under Time Machine backup disk(s) and you are ready to go :)

Thanks guys. I'll take a look at those ideas.

I've already taken the extra step to move rarely used archives and data files off-site on an encrypted cloud service.

I'm thinking of picking up this (https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/produc...=IR&acmp=RedFlagDeals&utm_term=644465&irgwc=1) to function as my Time Machine replacement. Any thoughts? I've checked multiple sources and it isn't an SMR but a CMR drive too.

Hi,

It seems to be AC plugged in and is not powered by USB only? If you need to shift the disk between various units that's something to take into consideration as well.

Ugh... totally didn't think that through. Yeah you're absolutely correct. I need to look for something closer to the Apple Time Capsule solution. Thinking buying one of these and getting a decent sized drive to stick in it now.

I don't really need any crazy redundancy as its mainly for backup only and temporary store of media until I get around to watching it.

Synology is a good brand, if you can do with one disk it's a good choice, but proper NAS disks are expensive!

I had exactly the same needs as you have and did not want to spend a fortune, but preferred an easy plug and forget solution. Ended up with this two disk unit with the WD "red" disks pre-installed and ready to use: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/produc...dbvbz0080jch-nesn-wdbvbz0080jch-nesn/10414462

Good luck with your decision.

Yeah NAS setups are expensive. I think a one disk scenario is good enough for my purposes as I leverage cloud more and more.
