I just upgraded my 2008 17" Macbook Pro with the 5K500 Hard drive. It fits perfect, and I now have almost 400 Gigs free. Woo Hoo. I found an awesome site for step by step instructions on how to do it, and it only took 20 minutes. http:///www.ifixit.com.

Regards,
Kalel the Jedi:D

Where did you find the 5K500... and how much was it? That is the drive that I have had my eyes on (for all of a week... or less).

Also, what is the best drive copy software? Is Carbon Copy Cloner good... or is there another program that I should use?
*EDIT*: Nevermind... ifixit says to use SuperDuper...

Why bother with buying software to clone your drive?

I use an external drive - take out your old drive, put it in the external drive case, install your new drive, then boot from the OS X or restore CD/DVD. Once you have a clean OS X install, use Migration Assistant to move everything over.

It's always worked for me, and in all honesty, I prefer to do clean installs on any new drive - it eliminates a lot of unforeseen hassles down the road and prevents a lot of crap from being on the drive that you don't need or doesn't need to be there....

Thanks... I'm a total n00b to Mac... so I didn't realize it could be that simple. I'm sure there is a thread already about which drives will fit into the 17" MBP... and which will not. Aside from the 5K500... are there other 500 GB drives that will fit?

That's the only drive that's available.

15" owners: I'm waiting just like you even thought I have a 17". I want a drive that will fit in all 2.5" enclosures when I upgrade again and 5-platter will not work!

I replaced mine with a 320GB drive... it was a pain in the ass, and i ended up denting the part of the case right above the slot load drive when i put it back together. Which was bent far enough to keep the disc's from ejecting properly.. I managed to get if bent back in place (almost not perfect) but yes doing a drive swap on a MBP is not easy. I don't see why they couldn't put a drive access door on the bottom of the case...

Anybody else switched their drive out recently? It seems that 120GB is a pitiful capacity nowadays, especially if you load Adobe CS3 and two versions of Quark Xpress. I only have 15GB of iTunes-related stuff, so it seems weird that I have 100GB of mostly applications.

I did the 320 WG Passport swap a few weeks ago on mine, after the stock 120 drive in it died suddenly. Never done anything like it before, and really took my time after reading a couple of walkthroughs and downloading a video off the internet. Quite enjoyed it and didn't think it was too difficult, just a bit fiddly - found trying to wriggle the drive into it's slot with that bracket thing that goes next to it was a pain, but got there in the end. Very pleased with all the space :D

I thought replacing that darn hard drive would be quite easy since I've done it on a bazillion desktop PCs before. Well, it was from an annoying software and jumper point of view. SuperDuper! worked swimmingly, and I didn't have to do that bass-ackwards "clone-master" thing that Windows hasn't figured out how to kill.

But taking a MBP apart is not easy. It's made harder when you don't have a T6 Torx screwdriver (I usually have one in my wallet) and don't see the instruction to take out four very long screws holding the top of the keyboard/cover in place.

Wonder what you'd write if you we're to replace the default factory grease with something better...

Anyway, ain't you glaad you have more leg room?

I didn't switch out the drive, but I did clean up the thermal paste crap job by putting on some Arctic Silver 5 :D

I may order the 5k500 tomorrow from OWC. I know for like $12 they'll have it at my american address the next day.

hhmm im not all that keen on using samsung, i would much rather Hitachi. more reliable imo.

true i could use that, and i probably will (unless hitachi brings out a 9.5mm model). take me 3months to save though

Ok now Im confused in the top quote you say you think samsung are unreliable and in the second one you say you might get one?At present you have TWO choices ( AFAIK ) the spinpoint that i posted the
link to in france or the hitachi that aint gonna fit unless you have a 17'' pro.Make your mind up dude

ok im better now, 11hrs sleep later :)

i think aus is so far behind because
a)most of the IT sector is ruled by private companies. E.g. Telstra (major ISP supplier and phone supplier) are interested in profits only, and are rediculous in upgrading, they upgraded our exchanges recently to ADSL2+, wayyyy behind.

b)our country just doesn't innovate anymore, we import waaaaaaay more than we export. so we are just using old technologies.

gotta hate it
