Hello all - I currently have a 2018 i7 Mac Mini that I'm using as a dedicated server for things like Plex and remote file access. I was thinking of selling it and getting a base-model M1 Mac Mini, but wanted to make sure there wasn't anything I might be overlooking. Here are my main uses:

  • Dedicated server for Plex and Infuse
  • Remote access to home network
  • Watching content on 4K OLED via HDMI. This is for things like sporting events that I can't access through, uh, legitimate channels
Is there any reason to stick with the i7 given me use case? I don't plan on ever "pushing" the machine or anything, and it seems like the idle power consumption is much lower on the M1.

Thank you in advance!

I can speak to Plex. Had a 2018 i5 mini, now have a M1 mini and Plex works flawlessly. Power utilization is much less too.
