You might have somehow formatted to FAT32 without you knowing it. Anyway if your Time Machine backup is good then try installing the new hard drive and restore from that. Since you are not overwriting your current old drive then leave it alone after upgrading your new hard drive in case you need it.

How do I go about doing that? I don't believe TM backups are bootable... so it would probably involve my OS X install disc?

EDIT: Okay this is bizarre... the disk is now OS X Extended (Journaled)... it magically switched back again!

Yes, you'll need your OS X install disc to boot from. Here is a how to: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-Mac-OS-X-v10-5-Leopard/751/1

You basically install OS X onto your new hard drive and then once it's up and running you can restore from Time Machine. iFixit also has another way which is in the same link I gave you. There is more than one way to do it so if your original way isn't working then you might want to skip it and try other ways.

And Time Machine copies all my preferences and such, correct? So restoring with TM yields the same results as cloning the drive?

I don't have any first hand experience with Time Machine, but I do believe that it does restore everything.

But, here's something to consider, since you've had weird problems with the external case and the new internal HD in the case, how do you know that if you put the new HD in the Mac, and the old drive in the external case that either the new HD or the external case are going to be usable? From my point of view, you haven't determined if your problems are related to the current HD, the new HD, the external case or the software. See what I mean?

The only other thing that I can think of would be checking the HDs with Disk Warrior if you have that available.

Okay; this is a bit odd... I tried another clone with CCC and it's been going alright so far (knock on wood)- about halfway through.

Only issue is there's a few files on the clone drive that I've never seen before, such as "usr", "sbin", "private", "net", "dev", "cores", etc and they all have a little minus (-) sign in the bottom right corner of the folder. When I try to open one, I'm greeted with a popup saying "The folder “(folder name here)” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."

What are these files?

I've got my fingers crossed that the clone completes! If the clone completes successfully, then you should try to boot from it to make sure it's good.

You probably shouldn't be trying to open files and look around the clone drive while it's in the process of cloning. Those are normally hidden files. The file names start with a "." (period) and normally are hidden from OS X view in Finder. How are you seeing them on the clone drive? I checked my CCC log, a found this:

23:41:24 Hiding files that should be hidden...
23:41:24 Blessing the target volume...

So, one of the last things that CCC does is hides the hidden files. I think what you're seeing is normal, when the clone is done they shouldn't show.

The clone worked! It finished, I tested it to see if it was bootable, and it worked! And yes, those files did end up hiding again. :)

That's part one of my adventure over. First thing tomorrow morning, I am installing the new drive! Thank you all for your suggestions!

I will report back here after the drive is installed and the files moved over to let you all know how it went.

:D

Congratulations on the successful cloning! Good luck with the drive installation. Once you have it installed you should be able to boot from the clone and be good to go. Do you have other files you're moving over or have I misunderstood what you're doing?

Whoops! Silly me... For some reason I was thinking I would have to do another clone. I must be tired! :)

Yes; it's all going well. Only thing I have to figure out is how to restore my Boot Camp backup I made with Winclone. And then, of course, what to fill up the drive with! :p

Glad to hear that the operation was a success. Fortunately/unfortunately I don't have any experience with Boot Camp or Winclone. I'm sure you'll think of something to fill up all that space with.

I'm trying it with SuperDuper! now, and if this fails, looks like Time Machine is the way to go.

It failed. It got less than halfway through and suddenly stopped. Why is this happening? :(

I have Adobe products on my MBP and I use SuperDuper to do automatic backups every other day. No issues here.
