Replacing iPhone 5s

I’ve been using my 5s for around 3 years. I like it a lot since it’s small and fit my hand. But lately i’ve been wanting to change my phone because the battery keeps dropping. and the performance getting slow even sometimes i tried to text someone back on whatsapp or imessage, i need to open it and swipe the app back then open the app again to text messages. and other apps started to hang even i cant use the assisive touch.

so, i decided to change my phone but i contemplate between the 7plus or the x. i love the upgrade on iphone x but somehow i hate the back of the phone it’s weird for me. and i’ve seen the drops video it’s cracked easily.
on the other hand, the 7+ was good but it’s too old for long term i guess

Everyone says Ex is the best. I kinda disagree but edge to edge design seems to be the trend. If you buy Ex, you have the best and the latest. Just suffer some software problems here and there, no big deal. In iOS 12, most issues we have spotted right now will be fixed, making Ex a great phone for

I bought the 5S when it was announced in 2013 and have been using it ever since. Like you, I love the small size of it, and I resisted going to the bigger-screened iPhones. The battery was starting to perform badly, though, so I knew it was time to trade up.

I'm just a few days into iPhone X ownership and its such a different experience - it's obviously much faster in general, but the overall size of the device isn't actually that much different to the 5S which was important to me. I had my 5S in an Apple leather case and it is still in pristine condition - so I've done the same with the X. Because of the case, (and a Belkin screen protector) I'm not worried about the back or front cracking.

Why not the 8+ and the X? Both are equally future proof - if it's only the back you are concerned about then might as well go for the latest...

Why not the 8+ and the X? Both are equally future proof - if it's only the back you are concerned about then might as well go for the latest...

The 8 is no more future proof then the 7, and its quite understandable that the 7 was chosen, just from a pricing perspective. The update between the 7 and 8 is very minor, so I can see why people would opt for the 7

I got the 5s about a week after launch. I too started having similar issues to you in last few months.

I got the X the day of launch. It is a fantastic upgrade. A dream to use, for sure. Yes, it is bigger but that did not take me long to adjust to and the gestures and overall interaction are very intuitive.

I do put it in a case and have a tempered glass protector on, though! It is much more expensive to fix if it breaks, even with AppleCare+, than the 5s! I think it is a beautiful phone though, it really is so premium in real life.

Maybe if you are looking at 7+ also look at 8+ as they aren’t much more and you do get an upgraded camera and some other things. My husband is also on a 5s and seriously contemplating the 8+ right now; it is not the phone for me but for many it is. It will be a much bigger jump in form size than the 5s to X though!

I opted for the glass protector as well, especially after seeing a number of folks saying their screen got scratched. I haven't opted for AC+ yet (I have my X in a case), but I think I need to make that decision soon.

It may not feel that way to you, but it sure seems like a very different size to me

Yeah - it's obviously a bigger phone, but to me it's not majorly bigger than the 5S when I hold them in each hand. The X can still slip into my pocket easily, and I can use it with one hand quite well. My son has a 7 Plus, and while the screen size would have been nice to have, the overall size of that phone was a deal breaker from me.

So the X is a very slight compromise for me in terms of size, but I guess there's not many high-end phones on the market with 4inch screens nowadays, so it was inevitable I'd have to get something slightly bigger. Plus I wanted the Face ID and other tech, so I thought it was worth it.

Overall, I'm very happy I replaced my 5S with the X

Seem to me if you like the hand fit of the 5s then your choice would be between the regular 7 and the X, not the 7 plus. The 7 plus does not have a comfortable hand fit unless you have big hands.

Both the 7 and X are fragile. Difference is the 7 is less expensive to repair. But if you put a decent case on your phone, put a screen protector on you just significantly decreased the odds of damage.

The 7 isn't "too old." It's two years old now, middle aged. It easily has another 2-3 years of lifespan. Certainly Apple will support it with updates during that period. X is a great phone, just depends if you want to spend (can afford) that much. Either way, if you like the 5s's size you won't be happy with a plus.

I had an SE and upgraded to the X, absolutely no regrets. Perfect size, fantastic display, and not that much more in price than an 8 or certainly 8+. Anybody looking at getting an 8 instead, save money and get a 7, otherwise you are wasting your money.

The problem now is iPhone X is not available in my country yet. And i’ve got to buy it in Singapore minus tax in airport so the cost wil be around $1477 for the 64GB could be more though. Which is $600 or so more expensive. Is it really worth it though? i’m afraid that if i buy it then i’ll regret it because the repair cost is expensive, it’s not available in my country yet, and it’s only 64GB🙁

Whether the price is right for something is very subjective. If your internal demand is, for one reason or the other, very high then you can usually justify the higher price.

For me, I would say paying 600 more for a 64GB is not worth it. Let me ask though, is it coming to your country at any point down the line? If so, I would hold off, although I can understand your excitement. When I was chasing after an X last week I was trying to convince myself a 64GB was enough for me because I would have more chances of getting one that way but now that I've got a 256, I can definitely say I'm glad I waited.

i think the x would come around next year usually it takes 1-2 years to get the phone into my country

That depends on your memory needs. In my case, for example, 64 GB is ideal. 32 is too small and 128 is a waste (my 64 GB iPad Touch has all the apps and music I need/want and only uses 32 GB of memory). So I would get a 64 GB 8 for only $50 more than a 128 GB 7. The newer processor and design features are worth $50.
