Very helpful!

I was thinking of upgrading from M1 Max Studio Mac to the M5 but with the RAM prices so volatile, I'd just rather get a base M4 Max Studio.

Unless you really need something new NOW, my suggestion would be to wait and see how the prices look when the M5 Studios come out. Apple has indicated that they're going to try to keep RAM prices in check for the time being, and if you don't like the M5 packages, there are other retailers like B&H Photo or Amazon that will still be carrying the M4 models for a while.

Apple trade in prices for my M1 Studio is a slap in the face though....

Computers lose their value fast. Everybody wants the newest and shiniest thing. Just look at all the people on these forums (and writing features) screaming "Don't buy the M5, the M6 is coming!"

If you feel you've gotten good use out of your M1, think of any residual value as icing on the cake.

If you buy right after they release a new Mac, chances are you won’t regret it.

However if you buy something soon, and then in April they announce the M5 Max Studio you may wish you’d just waited.

I’ve been timing all my Mac purchases for the past two decades so I buy right after they announce and when doing it this way I’ve never regretted it. I always get the absolute best option at the time.

The one time I purchased off cycle I regretted it because a few months later Apple announced the next gen and I wish I had just waited.
