The rear fan of my early 2009 Mac Pro is making an irritating noise (the fan that is in the same level as the CPU). A replament part with the installation work would cost approximately 200 euros which I think is a bit much.

I'm thinking of getting the part and installing it myself. I already tried unplugging the fan. I found the tab that attaches the fan to the aluminum chassis above it. Some force would have been required so I was afraid to proceed with just my gut feel. Could anybody give advice how that fan is safely removed?

Does the 5.1 MP have the same fan?

If you can find the replacement fan, the Technician's Guide will help you through installation (http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/macpro_early2009.pdf)
It sounds like you nearly had it, but there are just a few tricks to doing it. I've done it myself to clean out dust and its certainly not too difficult.

And yes, I believe the 5,1 uses the same fan, although the official Apple part number for the 4,1 fan is 922-8886, not sure if that changed for 5,1.

I am using a 5,1 fan connected to my 4,1 motherboard. They are compatable.
The fans are rather difficult to unplug. Just grip tightly and slowly pull and wiggle from side to side.
