I’m a day one standing in line for the iPhone June 29, 2007 kinda Apple fan but I’m not paying $2-3K to walk around with frickin scuba goggles on my face.

When I can get something that looks like a sharp pair of Oakley Deringers in my prescription with AR built-in that has several good use cases to improve my life, then I’ll spend maybe $1999 if I’m feeling generous that day and my altcoins moon.

Do you remember when Apple laughed at Samsung's "phablets" because 4'' was the perfect smartphone?

That Apple now selling 6.1'' as the standard phone size.

I do.

Do you remember that Apple laughing at stylus?

That Apple now selling the Apple Pencil.

I do.

Do you want me to continue?
Apple Pencil is not a stylus.

This makes sense to me. They should be used more as a tool, and not as a wearable.
Yep. Although I’m sure it’s not ruled out for the years ahead, at launch I think Apple has no plans to push this as a fashion accessory-plus-tech like the Apple Watch. Google/Snapchat/Facebook have struck out many times trying that, plus it takes away from the functionality of the device.

what apple is good with is convergence. They understand how to merge disparate technologies, bring them together and apply better UX. That is what they do. AR/VR is ripe for this. What I see/want is the ability to have 3 AR 8k monitors with a seamless virtual keyboard so I can design and develop on . That would sell. No question. Apple could bring this new form factor to market and kill it. People are only seeing this tech based on what is in market now like games and current AR gimmicks. This new form factor will dominate your life For certain.

LOL! Who would buy it? Gamers certainly have plenty of other less expensive options. It's already been demonstrated that both VR and AR goggles are a niche market at best, and that most people (currently) have no need for them. What would the average user do with a $2000 set of Apple goggles? See what an Ikea table would look like in their dining room? I don't think so. Apple would have to turn their reality distortion field up to 11 in order to convince people that this is something they need.
If it doesn’t pump out as much heat as the quest and it’s smaller and more portable with better battery life, I would get one for beat sabre alone :)

Apple Pencil is not a stylus.

From Merriam-Webster:
Stylus -
: a pen-shaped pointing device used for entering data (such as positional information from a graphics tablet) into a computer

Pencil -
: an implement for writing, drawing, or marking consisting of or containing a slender cylinder or strip of a solid marking substance

So, yeah, Apple Pencil is most certainly a stylus. I will never understand how it's possible to so strongly swallow a company's marketing BS that a person can turn off any sense of reason, logic, or common sense.

Apple Pencil is not a stylus.

On the radio there are ads from a hearing aid company that keeps referring to their hearing aid as a “hearing instrument”. In a documentary video about the Coca Cola company, the CEO keeps referring to Coke as a “sparkling beverage”. Is there a marketing or psychological term for this use of cultish, propagandistic alt-vocabulary?

Rumors say they are targeting a Mac Pro sales volume for the first version. This will probably be the first headset capable enough for real work. Ultimately AR will replace other devices. Anyone wanting a head start in this space will buy one. Novel applications like lightfield video and collaborative meetings may be practical early. There is a place in many creative studios. Adobe has a VR sculpting and 3D modeling app in beta that will likely support it. Final Cut Pro will probably support it. Apple will certainly be creating exclusive games and content.

Convergence you say? Good at it? They refuse to converge their macbook and their iPad?

VR for consumers, it's only use is for games. For business customers, if they wanted to use VR they would have already purchased an Oculus or Hive headset. In my opinion Apple is going to have a hard time getting their VR into the market because the market is already saturated with Oculus and Hive headsets and any business wanting to use them would have already purchased expensive windows machines to do the job. VR has proved very popular with product designers because they are able to look at their design as if it was in the real world and react to it as though it was in the real world. Apple would need to have a spectualar device if it wants to steal business away from Oculus and Hive.
Honestly, I am a fan of VR, but considering that the public couldn’t even be bothered to pull on glasses for 3D television I figure it won’t get beyond a niche market. That said, this comment reminded me of 2001 and the talk of the iPod never succeeding because Rio owned the market. So now I wonder.

I think that the only way Apple can succeed is if they develop AR glasses that are only as obtrusive as regular eyeglasses, and considering current technology, I expect that would take a few generations at least. So they would have to stick with it, unlike QuickTime VR, which I still haven’t forgiven them for killing.

People famously said that there was no need for computers in the home. Go to MacRumors comment sections in 2010 and you'll see people ridiculing the iPad as a useless giant iPhone that nobody would ever use . . . Hmm . . .

I'm fairly certain AR and VR will be MASSIVE parts of consumer tech in the near future. Of course first-gen products are too expensive and too buggy to use. They'll quickly become more practical over successive generations.

And I find it odd that in a world of video conferencing and remote working, people are stumped at potential use cases of VR . . .

I think screenshots of this comment section will be memes several years down the line.

AG was first developed in 1992 for the US Airforce, then in 2010 commercial AG was developed

Whilst there are AG systems out there being used in the commercial and business world, AG still to this date has not gone mainstream. Advances in technology move faster than many other industries and yet it still lags behind.

Just how far into the future does one need to go? Most of use will probably be dead by the time a viable AG headest is released for the masses.
